Travel Tips for Perry
Hickory Dickory Dock

Visitors to my other Oklahoma pages have already seen that there is scarcely an absence of town clocks on those pages. This is a feature of rural or frontier America, but also to a different degree a fixture of urban areas. In many Oklahoma towns (though not in Perry), a Victorian-style clock stands prominent on the public square by the courthouse and the veteran's memorial, but in Perry the clock stands off the main square yet still conspicuous on a street corner. Once again, just as with the old depot and the Carnegie Library, some manufacturer of standing Victorian clocks derived much of their business from budding county seats in the new Oklahoma.
Modern Lifelines
by mrclay2000
In a town like Perry, the original buildings are only kept alive by the willingness and energy of modern businesses to move onto the premises, preserve the original appearance as much as possible and welcome all clients and customers as their former occupants once did. The fact that most of the original structures run side by side helps promote foot traffic past the doors of each, and in a small community such as Perry, pedestrians need only glimpse from the sidewalk through the window to face their merchants as well as neighbors directly. Such intimacy is what many feel gives rural living its special charm.
DAWN BREAKS ON PERRY

"GOOD MORNING, PERRY OKLAHOMA!"
YAWN.......THIS WAS OUR FIRST DAYLIGHT GLIMPSE OF PERRY, OKLAHOMA. We had stayed the night in an exceptionally nice Super 8 motel there, then did a quick lap around the town before heading out.
So in other words, we don't really know anything about the town and can only give you our initial impressions. to us it seemed like a nice little community. there was some evidence of economic struggle, like the boarded-up storefront in this photo. But it looked to us like Perry was holding its own and putting the best face on reality that might be possible. We enjoyed our brief stay.
"THIS INDUSTRY CALLS PERRY ITS HOME"
THE FAMOUS "DITCH WITCH" is made in a large plant here in Perry. These machines are used all over the U.S. and perhaps abroad as well.
"SUNRISE OVER PERRY"
THIS WAS OUR FIRST VIEW OUT OF OUR MOTEL WINDOW IN THE MORNING.
Perry Has Seen Its Masons

"Typical County Seat, Typical Oklahoma Town"
Perry today and yesterday is the county seat for Noble county, a small, fairly sparse county in north-central Oklahoma. In 1893, Perry sprang up overnight as a result of the Cherokee (Strip) Land Run, which opened 6 million acres to white settlement on former Indian lands. The run was a sequel to the famous original run known as the 89er Land Run (1889) which established Oklahoma City. Perry today is fairly small (about 5,000 people), but faithfully retains its ancient origins and turn-of-the-century buildings.
