More about Ashland Chanticleer Inn

The Chanticleer Is the Best!

by TripAdvisor Member TheZooPeople

The Chanticleer is one of those rare inns with everything -- charming, comfortable rooms, delecious food, interesting guests, plenty of information, but most of all Ellen & Howie. Ellen & Howie are the champion innkeepers, warm, smart, fun and full of great ideas of things to see and do in Ashland. Although we first stayed with them four years ago to attend the Shakespeare Festival, we have kept returning not only for the theatre, but to take in all of the outdoor and indoor delights of the Rogue Valley and to enjoy Ellen & Howie's unflagging hospitality. The Jardin Room, a light, airy and large room with a fireplace and garden access has become a home away from home. The Inn's location is perfect too, just above Main Street on a quiet residential street a few blocks from the OSF and Cabaret Theatres. What's not to love?

A lovely B&B in Ashland

A lovely, informal place with some rooms opening directly onto beautiful gardens. Young hosts Ellen Campbell and Howie Wilcox are interesting and very helpful. A 10-minute walk from the Shakespeare Festival Theaters theaters.

Like coming home

We've stayed with Ellen and Howie several times the last few years and they have become friends. The property is beautiful, the house and the gardens. The breakfasts are delicious and vary from day to day. Each one better than the last. They modify each breakfast to the exact needs of the guests. Conversations with the other guests and the hosts are stimulating and fun. And don't forget the fresh baked cookies in the afternoon. Yum!! The rooms are all comfy. We especially like Pertelote with its view of the garden and private entrance. We really look forward to our stay each time we go. It's like coming home.

Charming, Comfortable, and close

Everything about this bed and breakfast is first rate: The hosts, Howie and Ellen are sociable without being intrusive. The breakfast is first rate. The accommodations are charming and the garden setting is restful. Finally, the location is just a couple of blocks from the downtown area and the theaters. We've stayed there twice now and hope to return again.

A jewel in Ashland's crown!

Enroute home from a 3 week driving vacation, we stayed 2 nights at this lovely bed and breakfast. Ellen and Howie were great hosts.....enjoyed chatting over those wonderful breakfasts. The cookies and tea were an added treat! Comfortable and cozy rooms made for a nice stay in Ashland, a pleasant little town in a gorgeous setting. The weather was cool so we could not enjoy their beautiful garden, but hope to return another time. I would certainly recommend this bed and breakfast to friends.

Wonderfully cozy

My husband and I were on the way up to Salem and decided to stop over in Ashland at the last minute. We walked up to the door unexpected and were greeted as if we had been there many times before. We enjoyed the warmth, interesting chats with other guests and hosts and the delicious breakfast. Thank you so much Ellen & Howie!

Same Time Next Year

Once again we had a wonderful stay at the Chanticleer. The craftsman house is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The rooms are bright and cheerful and spotless. The common areas are conducive to meeting the other guests. Plan on a long breakfast as you will want to take time to savour the food and enjoy the conversation around the table. Ellen and Howie are not only knowledgeable about the area but are also two of the nicest people you will ever meet. After your first visit you will have transitioned from guests to friends.

Thank you for the incredible morning discussions!

Ellen & Howie are excellent hosts. The breakfasts in the morning are wonderful - low fat, healthy, and you'd never know it! Ellen & Howie are delightful. The conversations with them and the other guests every morning were a wonderful and stimulating way to start off the day. The gardens in the yard are gorgeous, and the deer that visited the property were a particularly special treat!

The best so far, and we have quit looking.

This is our 5th year attending the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR. We have stayed mostly at Bed and Breakfast places near enough to walk to the theaters. The Chanticleer Inn is top quality and exceedingly friendly. The building is a Craftsman rather than a Victorian which means that the bedrooms are a little roomier and bathrooms, which are sometimes too authentic in Victorians, are more up to date. Good walk to theater and plenty of reading material as well as chocolate chip cookies, coffee, and tea available. We had great visits with other theater goers so it was fun to talk about what we had seen and were going to see. You will not go wrong with this one if you are looking for a quality place to stay, where you can walk a bit to the theater and avoid the parking problems. They had blankets for when we attended the Elizabethan theater as nights in Ashland can get cool outdoors. We got good tips on eating establishments as well as other stuff.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival is not to be missed by the way as the acting if absolutely first rate and there is a nice selection of plays to see.

Elegant and comfortable
