Pot Smoking is Virtually Legal Here
Beyond the reach of the FBI, ATF, and other federal drug authorities, the city of Ashland places a low priority on arresting folks for smoking marijuana. The city council has not gone so far as Santa Cruz, California in attempting to regulate and legalize marijuana, but it is clear the local police authorities in Ashland find low priority in busting college students, theater goers, and Lithia park picnikers for smoking pot. The origin of this situation is in a Oregon state law passed by the citizens providing medical doctors the right to prescribe marijuana to those in need of it. A similar but further reaching law has been passed in California. Recently, the US Supreme Court rejected these state laws, presummably because of the failure to adequately test and classify marijuana as a drug that doctors can prescribe. However, the business of busting folks at the local level is beyond the capacity of the federal government. See the article below for a discussion of this issue.
A trip to Jacksonville, Oregon...
A trip to Jacksonville, Oregon is enjoyed by many visitors. Jacksonville is a gold-rush town, well preserved and alive today. There is a good museum there, in the old county courthouse, and many old buildings and lively shops. It is especially noted for its summer-long music festival featuring the best of the type--from blues to Bach, and all between. Many people put this ahead of Shakespear!
A nice piece of history within a living community. The Britt Festival is open-air, set on a hillside overlooking the town and much of the Rogue Valley. The music features well known performers, including big names, and musicians (including classical) from over the world.
The Panda Guys
When the cry went up one evening -- "It's the Panda Guys! The Panda Guys are here!" -- the children at our campsite were very excited, thinking that a group of black and white furry animals had arrived.
To their disappointment, but to the delight of their elders, the Panda was a car, a Fiat Panda named Sylvia, and the guys driving her, Jim and Alan, had come all the way from Northern Ireland. They shipped the car to New York City, where Jim picked it up and drove west. Alan, who had less vacation time, flew into Detroit and joined him there.
Thanks to the Panda Guys, Mr. Stewart of Belfast is fast becoming famous.
You've heard of someone wearing her heart on her sleeve? Sylvia wears her travels on her paint job. In 2005 the Panda Guys drove her south through Europe and into Africa.
"Does this shot make my bum look big?"
Check out the website of the Northern Ireland Italian Motor Club and read about Sylvia's trip to Morocco.
When Sylvia reached Oregon, she was limping, fifth gear having failed somewhere in the middle of the country. Luckily, there was no shortage of skilled mechanics at the camp, and within half an hour she was fixed up, as good as new.
In this photo, the consulting surgeons plan the operation.

Wouldn't a Panda be a wonderful addition to your collection?
