Don't use the escape ramp!
I've read that Ashland does get some snow. Where I grew up, snow tended to stay on the ground all winter because it usually didn't get warm enough to melt. I'm assuming that when it snows in Ashland, it usually melts away pretty quickly?
I used to live there, and occasionally the winter is fairly severe. I can remember a few feet of snow on the ground for several days at a time, but generally it doesn't last too long or get too deep. It does get pretty cold there, and there's a lot of winter rainfall. If you like to ski there's a lodge at the summit of Mt. Ashland.
Ashland is usually pretty mild. we have a few days or weeks of freezing temps, but it usually defrosts during the day. Depending on your elevation, you could get snow or not. It's been known to rain at my house and be snowing at my best friends house just five blocks up the hill!
I walk everywhere all year around, and never have any problems.
It is nice in the winter because all the tourists are gone and Ashland becomes the cozy little town that we all love. If you really want to get to know Ashland, don't come in the summer- that's not locals you see, it's tourists.
There is free entertainment in Ashland in the summer before the plays, it is called The Green Show and offers very entertaining performers that play music and dance. Even tho we have not yet been to a play in Ashland, the Green Show has provided great entertainment during our overnight stays in the area before heading up to the northern Oregon coast. :)
Ashland can arguably claim to having the best Shakespearean Theater in the world, or at least outside of London. :)
The Shakespearean theater is compased of three stages. Most famous is the outdoor theater reminiscent of London and the original Shakespeare stages.
A beautfiul setting for summer nights and the Shakespeare Festival.
Many famous and soon to be famous actores can be found at the Ashland theaters. William Hurt and William Shatner are two that come to mind from years past.
