SCHOOL SHOULDA BEEN SO COOL!
Oregon has the McMenamin brothers to thank for the restoration of many old buildings. Here in downtown Bend, they have revived an old Catholic parochial school and made it into a hotel/brewpub/restaurant/spa/theater complex much as they have done with my grade school in Portland - Kennedy School.
The old school here boasts of a central hotel complex - school class rooms have become new hotel rooms. Hotel fares also cover entrance into an elaborate “Turkish” spa where you can float around a central fountain that is open to the elements - stars or snowflakes - and also attend one or more of the several movies showing in the old school auditorium while sipping a brew or having some food. There is also a main restaurant and brewpub forming the centerpiece of the St Francis, but a small satellite pub allowing cigar smokers can be found across the east side of the hotel parking lot with a large patio area that boasts several fir pits. Here you can really experience apres skis and discover several new friends in the process. Around the patio area are several houses that used be part of the school complex. These can be rented and my group likes to go for the Nunnery from which all of the amenities of the St Francis can be enjoyed. A great day of skiing can be capped with a soak, a flick and then sitting out by the fire with a glass of aqua vit, a cigar and a bunch of old and new friends. American apres ski gets no better!

Downtown Hotel Experience
Fantastic, Fantastic, Fantastic... Explore the website because I will not be able to describe it all here.
But I'll try!
There used to be an old Catholic school in Bends town center and in 2004 McMenamins bought it and turned it into one of it's local resorts. Themed after the very history of the hotel the grounds include a restaurant, 2 pubs, a wiskey and cigar bar, movie theater, turkish hot bath, music hall, 4 guest cabins, and 17 guest rooms, all decorated with unique antiques, and artisan fixtures.
To start...
The hotel rooms have a country cabin decor with all major amenities.
The cabins are family style with kitchens and common rooms with the same country woodland feel.
The restaurant and pub brew up their own line of beer and serve pub food and northwest hearty style cuisine. The place is decorated with anitiques and exotic finds.
The second Pub is open late till 230AM and a favorite with the young crowd around it's fire place.
The movie theater is cheap and you can order food and beer while watching a movie on the comfy couches.
The Music hall has a free folk and blues band on Wednsday night at 7PM, locals crowd the room.
The wiskey and cigar bar is small, intimate, popular and has a flock of outdoor tables and chairs with fire pits in the winter, really romantic.
And last but the best... The Turkish bath, 104 F with a beautiful fountain, stained glass, sky light, and mosaics all around, open all day to guests(free) and the public for a small charge. It is hypnotizing...
Unique Quality: Affordable for what you get in return. Guests get admission to the theater and bath for free and there are great weekday packages.
I payed $150 a night for a queen room under the "Hammer Head Package" and recieved for 2 people a $40 credit for dinner, a $20 credit for breakfast, 2 free pints of beer a night (one for each person) and free access to the theater and and bath. And it does not need to be exactly under each category, they just credit to the above total of $60 credit for each day. The clerk said to me, you can drink $60 worth of beer and it will be credited as long as you don't go over. I don't recommend splurging all on beer though cause the food is great ( Corned beef hash with rosemary and beets w/ poached eggs and toast- Blueberry Barbecue Pork Chop with greens and mashed potato- Hot cereal with Apple Compote- Stuffed Cheeseburger with thin fries and a micro brew)... MMMmmmm.
Go, as soon as you can to the Working Man's Resort...
