Travel Tips for Depoe Bay

A secret resort (of sorts)

by andreas81

It's a place called Bella Beach - really quite amazing and different in a lot of ways. This resort of vacation rental homes sits just north of Depoe Bay, and is like a small, gorgeous little town all itself. It's like dreamy Americana meets the future - in an upscale yet beachy way.

There are about 80 homes - 50 or so of which are available for renting for a night or two, or a week. There's a playground for the kiddies, and the homes vary from hideaway lodgings for two with oceanfront hot tubs, to larger accommodations for bigger groups. Bella Beach also offers up accommodations for groups as large as 60, if you happen to have a business retreat or reunion of some sort.

My home had a hot tub in the back and was not only immaculate but cozy and beautiful.

Then there's that wondrous beach. Like many of the beaches in the area, the tide line is at a rather steep slope, so waves come in fast and hard, but dissipate quickly to shyly lap at your feet.

A few awesome homes line the cliffs here, with a solid stairway for guests to access the beach. It's a sprawling 12 acres, but it truly is a hidden wonder.

There are many magical spots along the Oregon Coast and Depoe Bay is one. Named for a local native American, Thomas Depot - an early postmaster took it upon himself to change the spelling - Depot Bay offers the road bound traveler a chance to witness the drama of the ocean directly. Especially during or after storms, waves churn in and spouting horns shoot up over the parking along US 101. It is a popular stopping point and there are a lot of little touristy venues which hope to garner a little of your cash. The 6-acre harbor is the World's smallest - according to the Guinness people. Former times commercial boats used the harbor, though now the harbor is used by charter sports fishing - and whale watching tours, in season. The entrance to the small bay is a narrow cleft in the basaltic cliffs - not much wider than that found farther south at Devil's Churn. You line your boat up correctly and you are in the ocean or the quiet bay instantly. Line it up incorrectly and....
