transportation in Eugene

by nanadear

Hubby abd I will be coming in on the Amtrak about 5pm on a Tues. and need to get to the Gateway mall before 6pm to pick up a rental car. What would be the best way to get from train station to Gateway Mall? Looking forward to driving thru OR, was told it is beautiful. Also any advice about a car trip from Eugene along the coast and then to Sacramento would be appreciated.

Here's the public bus provider for Eugene:
http://www.ltd.org

It looks like there's only one bus, #12, that goes to Gateway Mall. If you walk about 1 block east and 2 blocks south from the Amtrak station in Eugene, it looks like you can catch the #12 at 7th/Oak.

Per your drive to Sacramento, I-5 is obviously the most direct route. It's pretty, with Mount Shasta and such, but nothing quite compares to that coastal drive through Oregon and Northern California. If you have time for it, I would cut west over the mountains from Eugene and follow US 101 and, if possible, California Highway 1, down to about Ukiah, then cut over to I-5 on CA 20.

I would encourage you to work with your car rental company about a Plan B. The reason is that it is not impossible that the train may be delayed arriving into Eugene. The Coast Starlight train (Seattle to LA) has a pretty good on-time record (just over 90%), but the Amtrak Cascades (Vancouver to Eugene) is on-time only 67% of the time. See http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer/Page/1237608335166/1237405732511 for train performance...

Now I don't want to disturb you - I think the "on-time" is measured one end to the other, so that doesn't mean all segments have the same problem. And 2 years ago, we took an Amtrak trip from Alexandria to Charleston, and I was concerned about the poor on-time performance of that train...but everything was perfect...but given that you're not allowing yourselves much of a window, I would think that you would at least want to give some passing thought to Plan B just in case...

thanks guys, I agree that it's a tight schedule. oruise ship comes in to late to catch the early train so we're put later getting into Eugene. I guess plan B would be to spend the night in Eugene and getting the car on Wed. We definately want to drive the coast, I'll check out that route. Thanks so much for the input.

I called the rental car place and they said they would be happy to pick us up at the station. Thanks for the help.

Amtrak Cascades out of Vancouver BC can get delayed for a number of reasons, including border control problems.

The chances of being delayed depend a lot on what train you are on. The trains that originate in Seattle are usually OK by the time they get to Eugene, but things coming out of Canada or California have a much longer distance over which problems can happen.

The coast road is definitely the most scenic option, but highway 101 is a much slower road than Interstate 5. It's only two lanes for most of the distance. There are a large number of state parks along the coast, and the entire distance has a huge number of attractions.

Travel Tips for Eugene

The University of Oregon Campus

by yooperprof

I came out to Eugene to visit one of my outstanding former students, a fellow named James. He moved out there from Detroit to work, and is now attending attending grad school. It's a very attractive campus - I can understand why so many people want to stay.

T-shirts in summer and winter

by isolina_it

not many, just depending on how long you stay t-shirts and jeans and sandals are fine in summer, in winter too just very few heavy clothes in case of a sudden ``freezing``. ``Hippie-style`` not disregarded! Watever you think you might need. Eugene is also equipped with natural medicine stores.

Spectacular loop drive shows off Oregon

by donamama

Take a day and soak in the glorious forested mountains just outside Eugene. Take Hwy-58 east to Westfir (stop and enjoy the covered bridge there) then Aufderheide National Scenic Byway goes over the mountains to Hwy-126 which takes you back into Eugene. Along the way stop and enjoy the river, many easy hiking trails with parking dot the road, Cougar Reservoir and the dam are enormous, if you want to spend the night there are many campgroungs.
After reaching Hwy-126 and turning left/west you'll come upon Mom's Cafe which has the BEST pie in the area ... do not miss this !

"Come hungry leave happy"

by Maria250 about IHOP

The first International House of Pancakes opened in a suburb of Los Angeles in 1958 serving a menu of hearty breakfast favorites. Today the restaurant still serves its signature dishes like the original buttermilk pancakes and pigs in blankets: sausage links wrapped in hotcakes. Other breakfast items include waffles, omelets, French toast and crepes. Non-breakfast offerings include sandwiches, burgers, entree-sized salads, and dinners like T-bone steak, pot roast and herb-roasted chicken
-Robyn Galbos

In my short: Very yummy! Yummy as it was yummy in AZ! IHOP is a very nice place for having very nice breakfast, making a very nice start to a nice day and fleeing nicely the rain by the way. Three things to stay or get happy.

The Sweet Life Patisserie: A...

by tinakitty813

The Sweet Life Patisserie: A bakery run by 2 sisters who know sweets! A fabulous selection of cakes, pies, tarts, cheesecake, cookies, eclairs, mousse, brownies, etc, etc, etc! They offer alternative items such as vegan, no wheat, no sugar, and use some organic ingridients. They also serve coffee, espresso, and tea. Indoor and outdoor seating, smoke free and open late.

They also provide their delicious desserts for many restaurants in town. Top of the line and totally creative (award winning) wedding cakes too!
Voted #1 Sweets (bakery) in our annual People's Choice food guide. A highly dedicate staff run by 2 hip sisters who work hard and constantly strive to outdo themselves. Cheesecake - the best I have ever ever tasted! Variety changes daily and whole cheesecakes are available to order.
