1 bedroom studio: Using VRBO for a vacation

by dustmon

We have used VRBO a few times now, and are sold on using a house instead of a hotel room for a base to see the area. VRBO #365943 is a little studio above the owner's house across from the beach, very easy to get to down a little path. Nice beach, near good restaurants in Newport, and close to lots of state parks along the coast for visiting during the day. The kitchen shared space with the toilet and shower and had laundry units as well. Not much of a view, but for $75 a night, we were not disappointed. Recommended for a couple or single, maybe a couple with a small child. There are 2 beds in the room.

across from the beach, close to restaurants

Columbia Gorge Hotel: Hood River - Columbia Gorge Hotel

by dlandt

Our friends picked this place out ands the rooms certainly are nice, welldecorated and extremely comforable... loved those double headedhot showers.

the best part of this place is the grounds and the back patio which overlooks the river.

Ester Lee Motel: Oregon Coast Hide-a-way

by tbubbette

We have stayed at the Ester Lee several times and never been disappointed. They have two sections. I haven't stayed in the new section so I can't offer any opinion. My preference is an upstairs unit with a full kitchen, 1 bedroom and wood-burning fireplace. All come with killer sunset ocean views. We scarcely venture out; this is a place for relaxing, reading and reconnecting. Very quiet and romantic. I highly recommend it.

Super ocean views and quiet.

Jesse Honeyman Campground: A beautiful place

by Segolily

I was expecting sand dunes and got a forest. This wonderful campground hidden in the trees just west of the sand dunes was a surprise. The campsites were spaced far enough apart to be private, there were campfires galore as everyone roasted marshmallows and talked over the day. If you didn't bring your own wood there was some to buy from the campground hosts. There are lakes to play on as well so there is plenty to do here. It might have been here where we took the walk to the dunes overlook trail.

There is direct access to the dunes for vehicles from one section of the campground. I took a short hike up and over one tree covered dune to where the ocean was visible a couple miles away.

We had come into this campground late on a Saturday night in Sept. and had no trouble finding a spot.

South Beach Campground: Packed and crowded

by Segolily

We drove without advance reservations since we had no idea how far we would get on our trip down the coast. I was hoping to get further, but the coast is just so dang amazing that it was getting dark when we arrived at Newport. It didn't look like we would make it to Beachside. So we went to South Beach. The entrance on the highway said the campground was full. There was another sign saying the campground was full. We still went in and asked if there was room for a tent. Apparently he still had one small site left where we could fit our tent.

Considering that we didn't have a reservation, that we were coming in late in the day, considering that we got the last place left, considering if we didn't camp here we really didn't have a back up plan, I should not have had any complaints about the campground. But I would not willingly come back to this campground. Maybe if I was coming with a group and I could reserve an end or a bend where we could be together then it wouldn't seem as crowded. But I felt like the sites were very close together with little room to move. I'm sure it didn't help that we were on the corner of the children's play area. Some sites here are definitely better than others. Get the ones on the outside of the far bend.

The walk out to the beach was nice. It would be a fun place to stay with kids and play on the beach etc.

The Nines: Luxury Hotel

by misodiva

This hotel is pretty darn swanky. But it was actually too swanky. The parking was something like $30 a day. And the restaurant food very pricey as well. Although I could afford the day rate, it was the meals and parking that made it a bit over the top. It was gorgeous designs, I must say, but not really practical for a business trip.

In the old Meier and Frank Building from 1910 I think. Beautiful design. Part of the starwood collection.

Trillium Lake Campground: with views of Mount Hood

by richiecdisc

Trillium Lake Campground was another real find on our trip to the Mount Hood area. Located at 3600 feet, it offers a cool respite from the heat of Portland in summer. This large well-developed campground has well spaced spots that offer a lot of privacy and are surrounded by trees. While the campground is generally full and is very popular with families it did not seem noisy in the least the night we stayed there.

There are vault toilets though well kept and modern for the style. Sites away from the lake were quite scenic. Those on the lake offer better views but are most likely less private as everyone goes to the lake and there are numerous paths in the area including the very popular one around the lake. The view of Mt. Hood is amazing and worth going to the park for in itself.

We paid $17 for one night in a non-premium spot (away from the lake). Lakeside spots are best reserved and only a few dollars more but keep in mind they may not be as serene as those away from the lake.

Silver Falls Campground: camping in a temperate rain forest

by richiecdisc

Much like the park itself, Silver Falls Campground is a bit of a local's secret. Set in a lush temperate rain forest, this gorgeous campground is a real pleasure to pitch a tent. Thoughtfully, one loop is for RV sites and offer electric and the other is strictly for tent camping. This makes for a more serene atmosphere for tenters. The better spots are on the outside of the loop and in particular down the end furthest from the RV loop.

We saw one spot down the end of the tent loop that was one of the nicest of the whole six month trip we were doing around the US. Unfortunately, they assign you a spot and we got one on the inside of the loop. These are a bit more cramped and there is a trail that runs through the middle of the loop to the restrooms which is quite busy, especially with kids using it as a recreational area. Luckily, the little tykes head to bed early. Aside from that, it's a real paradise and we wound up staying two nights rather than one. Rates depend on the season, but we paid a very reasonable $16 per night for tent camping. It's obviously more for an RV site with electric but it's one of the best priced campgrounds in Oregon from our experience.

Tahkenitch Campground: looking for something lush?

by richiecdisc

Tahkenitch Campground was our first stab at camping on the Oregon Coast. Our experience in California just prior to here was a mixed bag. The campgrounds were great but it was hard getting spots without a reservation. We were hoping that Oregon would be a bit easier. We didn't have a lot of printed information but stopped at the closed visitor center for Reedsport, OR. Luckily, they had a lot of brochures out for those in our position. Our original idea was to camp in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area but it seemed more the domain of Off Road Vehicles than a place for quiet campers like ourselves.

Tahkenitch Campground did not look like much from the highway and in fact was a bit closer to the highway than we would have liked but once in the campground, our fears dissipated quickly. It was a very lush setting and the sites were very well spaced. It was also not particularly crowded so we had quite a few spots to choose from. Ours was very secluded and surrounded by vegetation which offered complete privacy. It was a bit of a walk to the rest room but there was running water right between our spot and the next. The campground has 34 sites and modern restrooms. It was self-pay and the price was $20 per night. There was a campground host right on the premises and he came over to collect the fee and explain the amenities of the facility. It was a great place to camp and there was conveniently a nice trail leading through the forest to the dunes at the far end of the campground which we did early the next morning.

The Riverhouse Resort: Beautiful in Bend

by mitchnyburke

I know this response is quite delayed but hopefully it will still serve it's purpose. A beautiful little Gem in Bend, Oregon is the Riverhouse. You will definately be one with nature with so many walking/hiking trails and the hotel sits right on the banks of the Deschutes River. Literally you can keep your sliding door open and hear the river run all night long. But you are still within walking distance of Downtown Bend with Shopping and Restaurants. You wou't be disappointed.
