When visiting Oswald West State Park you should try to stay at none other than Oswald West State Park. We always prefer walk-in campsites when car camping and those here are the best we've ever seen. The thirty campsites are are available on a first-come, first served basis and are in very high demand. We knew this in advance and arrived before 9 am on a Tuesday and were lucky enough to snag a site. By the time we left on Friday morning the place was crawling with Portland hopefuls by 7 am. Anyone showing up after that was out of luck.
While we were there, the campsites were largely filled with Oregon, Washington and BC surfers but there were several families as well. Everyone we met pretty much shared our Northwest, middle class hippie culture: we got surfing encouragement from a Hawaiin transplant to Oregon who was out for the day with her grandkids; were entertained by some tavelling old-time musicians from Vermont (on their way to perform in Seattle of course); and got surfing tips and traded travel stories with a newlywed couple from Vancouver BC.
Every once in a while you find a place where you fit right in and the Oswald West campground was perfect for us.
Walk-in camping with running water and flush toilets amid old growth forest only 1/4 mile away from a stunning surfing beach.
It doesn't get any better than this!
