Transfer/moving to Portland...with 3 year old

by madd3883

I am trying very hard to move to Portland. But have yet to visit. I am from Philadelphia, and love it, but moved to Colorado for school and need to get out! It is me my gf and her 3 year old son. We want a safe neighborhood, but I need city life as well. Where should we look in Portland, or even surrounding areas?

Funnybeee and/or Stacyh, PDX immigrants, may be your best bet for good advice. Both have "Live" links on my Portland or Home Page "Comments" section, forget which. So does Amber101 (Amber), who may already be in the process of moving. Check out her great tip in the nearby budget thread. Best yet.

Depending on your budget and lifestyle there are lots of neat areas in Portland to live. It can depend on if you are renting or buying too.check out for descriptions. If you are from Philly...portland is probably pretty safe in most areas. Areas of "north portland" can be a bit dodgy but it also has some up and coming neighborhoods like "alberta" that some people love. As a general rule..SE and NE portland are fine, but the closer in the better. SE portland sometimes has a bad rep..but its the farther out areas near higher numbered streets like 82nd and 122nd. (I wouldn't live out there and I don't have kids) I can give you more specific info if you have some questions.
tell your girlfriend to check out for lots of cool stuff to do...I am a nanny and love all the parks, indoor play areas, kid friendly coffee shops, ect. Let me know if ya have more qustions.

Travel Tips for Portland

Walk!. The downtown area is alive. Walk around Pioneer Courthouse Square, Portland's 'living room', to the historic Yamhill area, and Waterfront Park along the Willamette River. Forest Park is the largest metropolitan park in the country. Rose Test Gardens are not only beautiful, they have wonderful vistas of Portland and the mountains.

River Place Marina

by Geoff_Wright

River Place is a great area to just stop and view the various activities that are going on around you. For instance, the boats in the small Marina here, or the working boats out on the River Willamette. You can park here for a while, for a Quarter or two in the meter!

The bridge here is Hawthorne Bridge, which lifts to allow ships to pass underneath.

Portland is very laid back....

by ESP2002

Portland is very laid back. It's accepted to wear flannel and loose warm clothing, even many jobs! While people are very respectful of each other, it's not necessary to act too formal... a nice change from big city life, ya know?!

Portland Marathon

by kcbrit

Supposed to be the best run marathon in the country. I ran in the 5 mile event which begins after the marathon but joins part of the course so you get to run with the marathoners for a while. If you do the short race you can watch the finish of the marathon downtown and cheer the brave souls who dared to 26.2 miles. Good running shoes

We stumbled across Camp 18 while on our way to the ocean. The buffet served on the weekend is about $11. The buffet table [which is a tree trunk sawed in half, length wise] was stacked full of fresh fruits, muffins, salads, waffles, pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits and gravy, Salisbury Steak, ribs, hand carved ham & roast beef, fried calamari, etc. The menu will change but there is always a huge amount of great food and deserts that come with the meal. Since the first visit we have always made a point to stop for brunch on our way to the coast. Heck we've even driven there just for the buffet with no ocean visit! It really is outstanding and worth the wait to get in.
One of the cool things is that there is a small river (or large creek) at the back of the property where you can explorer, try to catch crawfish, find caddisflies or have a picnic.
