More about Clarion Hotel Portland
Would have been great, but.....
by TripAdvisor Member ranandsus
I chose this hotel because of the reviews on this website; specifically because of the Tempur-Pedic mattresses that the hotel offers in some rooms. We made our reservations many weeks in advance for a room with a Tempur-Pedic since we were flying cross-country, getting in very late and knew we would be exhausted and wanting a great night's sleep to begin our vacation.
We arrived at the hotel after midnight and checked in with no problem (we thought). As we arrived at the doorway to our 4th floor room, we were met by the breathless front desk clerk, who apparently had run up the stairs to beat the elevator, to tell us that our room was, in fact, not ready at all, and that they would have to find us another one. (Not ready?? After midnight?? With reservations six weeks in advance??) She explained that they had allowed a flight attendant to rent the room and she had stayed "longer than they expected", so the room wasn't clean yet. Of course, no other rooms with Tempur-Pedic mattresses were available. Not wishing to be complainers, and also being very tired, we sighed, and accepted a room on the 2nd floor, with a regular mattress, and went to bed.
After a not-very-restful night, we awoke to bright sunshine. Very pretty, but the only for decoration curtains don't close and the windows are only covered by sheers, which I found a bit odd. And so far, none of this would have caused me to write a review like this.
But then...the toilet stopped up and we had to call the front desk, who very nicely and promptly sent a very nice man to fix it. And then, 15 minutes later, it happened again; this time it overflowed! So we called the front desk again, and they sent the same very nice man to "fix" it again (with his plunger). We had to wipe up the wet floor ourselves because the maids were not on duty yet; it was only 9:00am. Then we had to call the front desk again to ask for more towels for our shower because we had to use every towel in the room to clean up toilet water from the floor. The same very nice man who brought the plunger, brought the extra towels; the wet-with-toilet-water-towels remained on the bathroom floor. (Thank goodness it was only water!)
When we went down to check out of the hotel, I asked for the manager, and of course, there was not one on duty. The very nice girl who signed us out heard our tales of woe and offered the only thing she was authorized to offer, which was a 15% discount off the room rate, but mentioned that the manager would surely like to do better than that. Noticing the Pledge on the wall behind the clerk which promised customer satisfaction or "you will not pay for your room", I took her up on her offer to have the Manager call me on Monday morning. I also told her that by no means did I expect a "freebie", as we did stay the night and use space, etc., however, we were also by no means satisfied, and the manager needed to hear about the experience and make an adjustment in our bill. I also told her to be sure the manager understood that everyone had been very nice and polite (this was true; they were all very, very nice, and of course, I was nice too...no reason not to be...you don't catch flies with vinegar, right?)
So, did I get that promised phone call?? Nope! The manager, Shelley, did not call me back on that Monday as I was told she would. I did get an email from her, though it was much later in the week, and it was after I had filled out a "Customer Satisfaction" survey from Choice Hotels. Her email offered a discounted room for another stay, however, living in Florida, that will not do us a whole lot of good.
Once again, any of these things, in and of themselves would not be worthy of a poor review, because I think the hotel itself was really nice, and the employees were great, with the exception of the inefficiency of the manager. (Had she called me as promised, I probably would not have taken the time to write anything at all, or possibly complimented her "fixing" the problem if she had actually done so.)
I think if you choose to stay here you would probably be making an okay choice, just make sure you confirm, confirm, confirm. Oh, and check the toilet before you "go".
The room itself was very pretty; looked out over the lake and had a fridge and microwave, nice sitting area; wi-fi connection.
It looked like breakfast was probably good, though we had plans to eat elsewhere, so we did not partake.
Great Stay!

Used their sleep, park, fly service over the Christmas holiday week. The parking lot seemed very full when we got there but I managed to find a spot. Check in was very quick and the front desk staff was more than helpful, they even reserved us the same room for when we returned! Tempurpedic beds were very comfortable and the shuttle driver was great when we left at 4 am the next morning. We flew back in at 11:45 PM on New Years Eve and didn't get our bags until after midnight. Even so, the shuttle driver showed up and was all smiles. He was very pleasant and helped us with our bags. Check in was blissfully quick for us weary travelers. We had a great nights sleep and a wonderful breakfast in the lobby the next morning.
Clarion -- a nice sleep and breakfast before a flight.

We have stayed at the Clarion a few times now to be near the airport for an early flight and used the park 'n fly option.
The place is newly decorated in a fairly modern/asian sort of vibe.
Breakfast was decent, they have the do it yourself waffles and non-packaged pastries and muffins and that sort of thing. I think they had eggs and sausage as well. View of the water from the breakfast area.
Tempurpedic beds were comfy as other reviewers have stated.
We had the same airport shuttle driver a few times (a law student) and he was probably the nicest driver we have every had.
One thing to note is their airport shuttle stops at midnight. We got in from a late flight one time but asked a shuttle driver at the airport from a neighboring hotel to drop us off and her did.
Great deal

I booked through the Clarion website for a Friday in April. With taxes came in under $90. Was upgraded to a large room with king size bed, desk and free internet connection, refrigerator, microwave, nicely decorated, nice bathroom, iron and ironing board. The room was clean. The pond isn't much to look at. Hotel is close to a new shopping area with the popular chains (Jamba Juice, Starbucks, etc. and IKEA. Easy access to the airport, 15-20 minutes to downtown Portland by car.
The front desk was extremely helpful even printing out directions for me.
The free breakfast is considerable and included; biscuits and gravy, a waffle maker, eggs, sausage, bagels, cereal, fresh fruit, a variety of coffee and tea. Being in Portland I would have expected soy milk though for those that don't or can't have milk.
One of the best deals I could find in Portland. A nice, clean, comfortable hotel for a reasonable price. If you plan on exploring the rest of Portland you might want to rent a car, if just staying for the airport, or to visit downtown Portland only, just use the shuttle and/or light rail.
Great Park and Fly service
by TripAdvisor Member Kitters
We live about 50 miles from the Portland Airport and were very pleased to discover this hotel's park and fly service. We had a very early flight out of PDX and were not looking forward to driving in to the airport in the wee hours of the morning.
I learned that the Clarion had a Park N Fly service from the TA reviews. I found that we could spend the night and leave our car in their lot while on our two week vacation for only a few dollars more than it would cost to leave our vehicle in long term economy parking.
The hotel is very clean and quiet, just off Airport Way. We arrived on Tuesday evening when they have a wine tasting with snacks, lemonade, and other 'goodies'. That was a pleasant surprise, as we had a late lunch and planned to just have some 'muchies' before retiring.
The shuttle arrived promptly at 4 a.m. to take us to the airport. When we returned 2 weeks later, the shuttle picked us up within a few minutes and the driver dropped us off right next to our car.
Convenient airport lodging
by TripAdvisor Member aprille
The Clarion was a nice place--pleasant, modern decor; the room was in good shape, convenient to the airport and to the National/Hertz car rental outpost. The breakfast was pretty good (although they stop serving at 9 on weekdays); they had both hot and cold items.
Check-in was slow; there was only one person working the desk and she seemed overwhelmed. We had also requested a crib for our baby at the time of making the reservation, and when we checked in, they said they were getting us one. After waiting a couple of hours, we called down and they said they couldn't find it. In the end, we never got one.
The bathroom was basically in good shape, but strangely gross in one area (see photo). I'm not sure how they missed that, since it seemed like the room had been recently refurbished otherwise. The sink, fridge, and microwave were nice to have in the room.
I'd probably stay here again; it was pretty inexpensive and not bad, though I'd check out what was available at other places nearby too. There were several hotels in the area that seemed in direct competition to this one.
We did not take the airport shuttle because we had the rental car, but they advertise it as being available every half hour.
Quality service and accommodations

We had an early flight so decided to stay at an airport location instead of causing our son to have to drive us so early. Our reservations were done by phone, taking into account of reviews on this web site. We requested the Temperpedic bed. We were so please with the size of the room and the amenities that we were sorry we had to leave after only one night. The staff was quite courteous. Our wake-up call was prompt. The hot breakfast was ample. The shuttle to the airport was on time. The desk personnel showed us how to precheck from the hotel's free internet, so that we did not have any line but security at the airport. Our view from the North 4th floor was over the lake. There was no outside noise or hall noise.
It would be hard to find a hotel that would beat this one. The price was $70. It was more of the quality of a $150 room.
Value/Price ratio off the charts

I travel about 6 weeks a year for work and we typically stay in Hampton Inn type places when doing so. However the hotels in the airport area in Portland are more pricey than I typically like so I decided to try to Clarion due to it's very low price and good reviews.
The rooms were very clean, though there was a smell in my room I couldn't distinguish. I got used to it in about 5 minutes I think it was something they used to clean but that was the only bad part about the room. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very modern and nice except for the tube television but it was fine. The view of the pond was nice.
The gym downstairs was nice there is an elyptical, treadmill and bike for cardio which were all nice the Precor brand machines. There was an additional machine for doing upper body and arm excercises and some limited free weights. The pool seemed nice but I never jumped in.
The breakfast was ok. It is the typical contenintal breakfast you get at a place like this. They had the make your own waffles which I like but I never got any eggs as they were always gone, but the biscuits and gravy were good. I'm not a fan of the cereal being put in a glass jar which they had, it just seems like a great place to breed bacteria and have old cherios sitting at the bottom. Just give me the little box full of cereal. The waffles were good like I said but they had cheap syrup, and in their stack of fruit they had oranges and apples but only bananas one day. The yogurt didn't seem cold so I didn't get an but lots of people seemed to be eating it. On Tuesday night a guy with a vegas style show was in the dining room singing. There were ordeuvres but nothing special.
All in all I can't complain for the price I paid. I would definately stay here again if I needed to stay near the airport.
Top Notch value

This was an excellent choice for us the night before an early flight. The price was under $80. The room was a king with partial kitchen and setee overlooking the lake and extremely quiet. The service was courteous, prompt, and on time with our wake up call. The Breakfast was ample and the shuttle was on time. Best of all was THE BED.
Can't beat the price!

Had the pleasure of staying here at the front end and tail end of our Oregon trip. Arrived late in the evening and the shuttle arrived within 5 mins of my call to the front desk. Check in went smooth. Room was very clean w/2 queen beds. Tempurpedic beds were super and contributed to a good night's sleep.
Breakfast was sufficient with a good selection of cold and hot foods. There are restaurants within walking distance of the hotel as well. One is open 24hrs.
The complimentary shuttle was great in getting us to PDX so that we could catch MAX into town. Though we were close to PDX, we really couldn't hear any aircraft.
Complimentary internet access worked great too and could connect right away. Very close proximity and easy access to I-205.
All staff were friendly and professional. Would definitely stay here again in the future.
