Avalon Hotel

Has anyone stayed at the Avalon Hotel just SE of Downtown Portland?

If so, what was your experience?

Re: Avalon Hotel

by glabah

I've not stayed there. I've been by there quite a few times though because of the public walkway along the river (Willamette Greenway Trail) that goes right by there. From the trail, all you can see of the place is what looks like a very expensive looking restaurant, and you can't even tell it is there. The place must have a great view of the river.

Travel Tips for Portland

Pioneer Courthouse Square

by yonsei

This is a good central base of operations. Most of the cental buses stop here, plus both MAX trains. Sit on the steps and eat a burrito, read your newspaper, and watch the hackey-sackers. Oh yeah, tourist and transit information can be found in the kiosk underneath the waterfall.

Illegal to pump your own gas

by TashieKitten

That's right, just sit in your car and let the attendant do his/her thing. If you try to pump your own gas it is punishable by law. Once you get back to any of the surrounding states though you're on your own. This is a pretty lame law, in my opinion, but I have to say, I don't mind it when it's raining out!

Least Best Kept Secret

by IncogNeat-0

Update: May 2007

A good half or more of the Portland Streetcar system runs through FARELESS SQUARE. Trimet tickets are accepted elsewhere. Validating machines are located in each car, but don't worry about it, they are seldom used by anyone except tourists. That, believe it or not, is the current unofficial policy; could change at any moment, of course.

The system is staffed by Trimet, but is a separate entity entirely. Its main purpose, as far as I can tell, is to provide easy access to & help promote the pricey Pearl District.

Streetcar movement can be tracked on personal computers via the live link below & is much more accurate then annunciators located at each stop/shelter. Early morning service, especially on weekends, leaves much to be desired.

Weather

You should always be prepared for rain when coming here. For when the rains come they come heavy. As you can see in the pic I am always prepared. My red-cap coke for the Hilton Honors points in the bag. Good shoes because you never know where you have to look your best. And of course my flyertalk tag. All completely dry under my umbrella, because I'll be sleeping in these clothes tonight on a plane going home.

Edgefield Mcmenamins..check it out!

by TrvlnGrrl

Edgefield is one of the many things owned by mcmenamins in Portland, but one of my faves. it is an old poor farm mansion looking building from the depression turned into a hotel, with a couple restaraunts, bars, movie theater(although no couches like Mcmenamins Kennedy School) There is often bands playing and different events held in the wine bar. It has the same eclectic vibe as kennedy school..but slightly more creepy. Paintings made from realy photos of people that use to live and work there give it the vibe. There is so much to see, I still see new things every time I go.
