Great place to stay in Portland
The Hotel Monaco is a terrific hotel. Located in the downtown area of Portland, it is within walking distance of many places and provides easy access to the metro system.
Our room was spacious, with a sitting area and separate bedroom along with a good sized bathroom. The room was nicely decorated and the bed was extremely comfortable. Very pleasant for the time we were in the room.
The hotel has a lounge off the lobby and includes a free wine tasting and social hour each day for guests. There is a restaurant connected to the hotel called the Red Star Tavern that was very good. The staff were all very friendly and humorous in a respectful way, and there is even a doorman who can help with cabs or directions, if needed.
We enjoyed our stay there and would recommend it to others.
Unique Quality: Free wi-fi throughout the hotel. Decent fitness room.

Now the Hotel Monaco, Portland
The Hotel Monaco (formerly Fifth Avenue Suites Hotel) is still owned by Kimpton Hotels but it has been overhauled and is beautiful! The service is impeccable from the greating from the valet to the porter for the bags. Everyone addresses you by your name and makes sure that the accomodations are comfortable and your stay enjoyable. 5 star service with a 3 star price!
The location is excellent and is easily reached from the airport or driving in (if you can handle all the one way streets in down town).
The only negative was the valet charge was very expensive ($27 per night).
Unique Quality: Every afternoon at 5 pm there is a wine hour which features wines from the local vineyards.

Classy, comfortable, great for single women on biz
Just stayed there twice in Jan & Feb. Great service, late check-out, yummy bedding, roomy well-lit bathroom, downtown, safe. Use their website to find deals.

Classy but not too spendy
I've actually never stayed here, but I've done some investigating into luxury hotels and this is the cheapest I've found. You can get a suite for $129 on the weekend.
Unique Quality: The location is right downtown and you can get to anywhere by car, bus or max from here very easily and there are many things to do within walking distance. Pioneer place mall is just a few blocks away, as are many other stores, restaurants (Greek Cuisina) and other attractions.

Luxury for a good price!
Kimpton International specializes in cozy, boutique hotels. Fifth Avenue Suites is probably one of the best hotels (for a very good price) in downtown Portland. I've stayed at 4 different hotels in downtown Portland over the past 5 years (I travel there 3-4 times each year), and I always recommend Fifth Avenue Suites to all my colleagues--workmates and friends. You can book directly through Kimpton Hotels, www.quikbook.com, or through the Portland Visitors Association (www.pova.org)--they usually have great hotel deals for Portland.
Unique Quality: AVEDA products in the room; AVEDA Spa and Store on the ground level of the hotel! Heaven for AVEDA lovers! ;)
Also, each room is a very good size, many with separate sitting area, feeling like an apt. rather than a hotel room. Rich, jewel tone colors are the theme. Bathrobes are provided for guests.
Every evening there is a wine hour, with samples of good Oregon wines. The inhouse restaurant (Red Star) is very good--features Pacific Northwest cuisine--I've had several great breakfast and dinner meetings there.
Great location too! Right smack in the middle of downtown Portland, close to great shops, restaurants, MAX light rail, etc.

A fabulous boutique hotel!
I searched long & hard for a great hotel to stay at during the Xmas season, for this was to be the first visit for my girlfriend and her teenage son. I'm very glad I picked the 5th Avenue Suites!
Unique Quality: The service is impeccable and well coordinated. The hotel is large & spacious. They offer free WiFi Internet access too.
Highly recommended!

Fifth Avenue Suites, downtown Portland OR
Fifth Avenue Suites is on the corner of 5th and Washington, smack in the middle of downtown Portland. It's entrance (on Washington Street) is a little inconspicuous, but inside, the lobby is large, warm and comfortable, in a continental European style with a fireplace and nice large chairs.
Although it is a suites hotel, the room I stayed was a regular queen. The interior is French and cheerful, with fun touches such as leopard-pattern robes and a teddy bear; and the large, well-appointed bathroom was great! Although the hotel says it is Wi-Fi enabled throughout, I didn't get reception in my room, so you should enquire if you need Wi-Fi in your room. There was plenty of signal in the lobby.
The hotel has a nice-looking restaurant, Red Star (I didn't eat there), and there are plenty of eating options within a few blocks.

I was assigned this hotel through a Priceline reservation and most certainly did not get a "suite". How can they call this hotel 5th avenue suites when there are not all suites? They got the 5th avenue part correct, they are on a very busy and noisy city bus stop. Buses going by all day and night. Hotel ok for price paid, but nothing special, particulary my small "suite".
we love this hotel!

we travel to portland from the east coast several times a year; our son is a student at the univ of oregon (go ducks!). we always spend several days in the city and always stay at fifth avenue suites. we love the location--central to everything--and not at all noisy. the staff is wonderful; they want nothing more than to make their guests happy and comfortable. they never forget a name or face--walking in to the hotel and being greeted by name is a great way to come "home". the rooms, even those that do not qualify as traditional suites, are large and comfortable. the red star tavern, the hotel's restaurant, is very good, also. this is our home away from home!!
Excellent for the price

OK, so it's not quite a Four Seasons, but I stayed at this hotel last week after booking online at a rate one would usually get at a Hilton, Sheraton, etc. and it was a fantastic deal for the money. As a previous poster mentioned, it was very peaceful and quiet, room was very well-appointed, and the location can't be beat. I found the service to be very friendly and helpful, and the wine tasting and the painting materials set up for guests in the lobby one evening made the stay special. The lobby fireplace is very cozy on a rainy afternoon. The free wireless internet worked perfectly, everywhere, including the room, lobby, and the restaurant. The gym is just okay and it would be nice to have somewhere to hang your robe in the bathroom, but those are literally the only things I can think of that made the stay less than 100 percent perfect. They even like dogs there ( a plus for me, but potentially a minus for others). They had a dog-shaped blackboard on the counter with "welcome" and 4 different dogs' names written on it as a recognition of the canine guests currently in residence, which was pretty darn cute.
Q:Public transportation "Coming to Portland next week. is there an easy way to go the coast for a day trip via public trans?
Cheers
NYTim"
A: "The closest coastal town to Portland is Tillamook (not quite on the coast, but close), which is connected by a bus from Downtown Portland and offers another bus..."
