San Fran to Florence, Oregon?

by fuzz7601

What is the best route to take? All the way up 101, or partway up I5 and then switching over to 101? i am aware it is about an eight to nine hour drive. We will be driving this all on a Wednesday, I don't know if the day of the week makes a difference with traffic or not. Thanks!

Hwy 101 is probably your best route going over to I-5 would take you to far inland, just to come back west.

Wednesday won't be any better or worse than any other day. Time of the day will make the difference. Hwy 101 is a major commute route out of SF up to the Napa/Sonoma area. If you can get out of SF by 2:00 - 3:00 PM you will fine. Otherwise it will be slow and go about to Santa Rosa then it will open up and go pretty fast.

It will be four lane and two lane at various points all the way.

If you have time take the little detour along the Avenue of the Giants. It is only 31 miles long and runs parallel to Hwy 101. It starts just south of Phillipsville and runs up to about Pepperwood.

You would only want to do this if it is day time, but well worth the time.

James r, thank you for the reply. I think we will defintely be taking the avenue of the giants road, sounds interesting. We will be leaving san fran around 9am so hopefully we can make some good time, even with the side trip.

That is an excellent time to leave. You will hit some traffic in the city, but once you get out of San Francisco you should be fine. Most of the commute traffic will be going the other way. Also you will probably be able to use the HOV lane. I am usually going into the city at that time so I am not sure what the HOV lanes are like on the otherside of the road in the AM.

Travel Tips for Portland

visit the Pioneer Square! It's the epitomy of diversity; bums, millionaires (holding onto their wallets), rich wives with snobby kids, college students begging for discounts and the famous version of 'Making of the Bands' that the homeless people do to ensure their dinner that night. But, the actual mall is a very prestigious four story, two part experience and it's exhilarating if you are a die hard shopper, like me! the people and the fantastic view! The people in Portland are sooooooo nice (minus the 3 fights I witnessed at Bar 71.) I loved how you could go into Powell's and find everything color coded, how you could take 10 different routes home and see something new everytime and mostly, the friends you will envitably meet there! It's not only worth visiting, it's worth it to live there!

Beavers downtown? Well, this is the 'Beaver State', and Portland is the 'Rose City'. If you look real closely you will be able to see some of our other 'wildlife' downtown. Spring is glorious . I miss it when I'm away.

Packing List

by ESP2002

No matter what season it is, pack warm clothing... just in case. It can tend to get pretty cool at night in the summer. The beaches are normally very cool, about 65 degrees during the day is possible. The water is also VERY cold, plan accordingly!

Attend the Adult Soap Box Derby races at Mt. Tabor

by Terra_H

Mt. Tabor park is a park at the top of an extinct volcano in SE Portland. (see website for more park info) and I was lucky enough to attend the Adult Soap Box Derby races there recently. There's a ton of fun activities like this in Portland and this one didn't disappoint! Check out the travelouge for more info.
