Although I love going to the Hawthorne district or around 23rd, my favorite place in the Portland area is Multnomah Falls. It is really beautiful no matter what time of the year you go there. In the winter it is incredible to see the water frozen .. .You should also stop by Crown Point to check out the view and feel the strength of the wind. I remember when I took my boyfriend to see the falls for the first time in January. The water was frozen and it just began to snow -really beautiful!
Immigration Pro & Con

"People coming from California or the east coast usually find everything here very cheap in terms of real estate." - glabah
Too true. They have added great vigor & vitality to the area, but I also worry about what will happen to all the lively little boutique shops depending on discretionary income of others if & when the hammer falls. Will these most prized of immigrants, increasing the welfare rolls, in turn become the most despised?
Don't call them water fountains!

I thought it was funny to see how proud Portlanders seem to be of their Benson Bubblers - our walking tour guide even told us he'd once seen a woman with a Benson Bubbler tattooed on her shoulder!! The first of these bronze drinking fountains were installed in 1912 and they're named after Simon Benson, a man who'd made a fortune in Oregon with his logging company. Benson himself didn't drink alcohol, something that was fairly unusual in Portland at the time (and probably still is!), and he wanted to do something to prevent his crew from coming back inebriated after lunch. It wasn't entirely his men's fault since back then you couldn't walk into a pub and order a glass of water - you only got one if you also ordered a beer! Benson decided to give the city $10,000 to install 20 drinking fountains in the downtown area. They were such a big success that Portland now has a total of 52 Benson Bubblers providing fresh drinking water 365 days a year, from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm.
Packing List

Plan for all types of weather. The saying goes that if you don't like the weather in Portland, wait 10 minutes, it will change. Plan for cool evenings and rain just about any time. It can actually get quite hot for about a week or so in the summer but you never know which week that might be. Plan for overcast days that can suddenly turn bright. Good walking shoes are a must for the downtown area. Just too much to see and driving can be too frustrating if you want to get around.
Multnomah Falls

If you have a little time and a rented car, take a drive on Interstate-84 about 30 miles east of the middle of Portland. It is probably one of the most visited attractions in Oregon, because of its location along the interstate.
Not only is it very scenic, but a good place for a hike. If you take the 1.2 mile to the top of the falls, there are more trails -- six miles to the top of Larch Mountain, where the falls originates (underground springs) and a six mile Wahkeena Loop trail as part of the Multnomah Falls National Scenic area. (Be careful when hiking, especially when its wet.) There are a number of other falls in the area.
There is an old 1925 lodge at the base of Multnomah Falls, and though there is no longer overnight lodging you can make reservations for dinner.
There’s also a snack bar, gift shop and information center staffed by the U.S. Forest Service and Friends of Multnomah Falls.
Multnomah Falls drops 620 feet from its origin on Larch Mt. and is said to be the 2nd highest year-round waterfall in the U.S.
Directions:
Use freeway parking lot exit at Exit 35 on I-84 or use if traveling west take the signs for the Historic Columbia Highway (it parallels the freeway but is very scenic)
