private cruise or sail on the river for romance?
by girl2travel
I want to take my husband on a romantic cruise for our anniversary. So far I've only been able to find large ships, I want something smaller, more private, more romantic, a sunset cruise on a private boat is what I'm dreaming about...any ideas?

Try going at it from this angle. Look for a small vessel that does fishing trips/ tours on the Colombia. Contact that Captain or outfit and tell them what your real intention is rather than fishing, I bet you will find a nice small boat in no time.

Travel Tips for Portland
Nobody takes Portland's...
by derats
Nobody takes Portland's expansive beauty and livable charm for granted. It has spurred a healthy sense of civic responsibility; a desire to avoid gangs, gridlock and other boom town crises. Ballot initiatives are debated vociferously. Locals see the fruits of their clout in an urban growth boundary, light-rail, and more.
Portland was built at the last stop on the Oregon Trail. People continue to stop here, take an appreciative gander, and resolve to stay for good. Native Portlanders are resigned to the fact that you may be unable to leave. They don't expect you to slam
the door shut behind you, but ask that if you choose to stay, you walk softly and carry a big umbrella.
Food carts of Portland
by Jefie
Nowhere else in the world will you see such a high concentration of food carts as in downtown Portland. It's estimated that there are now over 400 food carts in the city, with several of them clustered in parking lots downtown (the three major spots can be found at Adler St & 9th Ave, at Stark St & 5th Ave, and at Start St & 3rd Ave). They're especially popular at lunch time, and they offer a wide variety of ethnic food at very reasonable prices. In case you're wondering, Portland's food carts have very little to do with the hotdog and pretzel carts you'll find in New York City - many of the carts are run by culinary school graduates looking for an inexpensive way to get started in the business and hopefully gain some recognition, which therefore makes it possible to enjoy very good food at a very low price. Some carts even include small sheltered areas with tables and chairs for customers. With so many choices I'd say the easiest thing to do is just to follow your nose, but it's also possible to read food cart reviews on "Food Carts Portland", a website entirely dedicated to the city's food cart culture.

People in the Northwest of the USA are known for being easy going, and mellow. Well, this is mostly true but Seattle(my hometown) has had 3 riots in the last 1-1.5 years so some people arent mellow!
But in general people are relaxed, when dealing with people you dont need to say sir or mam/miss unless its a police officer/customs agent, or job related thing. Maybe all our gray skies have made us patient.
Northwest people are also known for our coffee addictions, if you need to find coffee, its not a problem! Portland and Seattle have coffee shops on every block it would seem.
FISHING
by mtncorg
Few cities in the World can boast of salmon runs right through their hearts. Portland can. During the appropriate seasons, the river is alive with small boats full of fishermen trying their luck to catch the fish, bound for upstream ancestral spawning grounds. Plenty of other fish prefer to spend their whole life in the Willamette waters. Fishermen like to try their luck with these, as well. A fishing pole, proper test line and bait might be useful.
See the city panorama from a rose garden!
by phildeni
When tourism is addressed regarding a city, it is hard to be off the beaten path and still see the most interesting parts of the city. Walk along the Willamette River, hike in Washington Park, and see the city from the beautiful National Rose Test Garden..high above the city.
Questions and Answers
Q: Public transportation "Coming to Portland next week. is there an easy way to go the coast for a day trip via public trans?
Cheers
NYTim"
A: "The closest coastal town to Portland is Tillamook (not quite on the coast, but close), which is connected by a bus from Downtown Portland and offers another bus..."
