10 Digit Dialing
by TashieKitten
There's a new area code in town kids: 971. It hasn't obliterated good ol' 503 but now there are two in town soooooo...when you dial a phone number you need all 10 digits!
To recap:
the Portland Metro Area has 2 area codes: 503 and 971.
The rest of Oregon uses the 541 area code.
Blackberries for everyone: Caution may be poisoned
by glabah
Blackberries are everywhere in the Portland area, and to a lesser extent all over the northwest. The most common type was introduced and is now considered an invasive species because they take over just about any open space and to a lesser extent forest land.
Therefore, you can pretty much find them everywhere. Most commonly they are around in late summer, but the exact season depends a lot on the amount of rain and average temperatures during the year.
The vines are easy to spot: they are the long thorny vines that stick out of just about any pile of weeds and brush in wild lands around Portland.
However, if they are beside the roads it is quite possible that they have been shot with any number of assorted poisons by the highway department to kill them. You do not want to eat those, unless you are certain that they have not been sprayed recently.
Trail Blazers
by TashieKitten
The Trail Blazers can be seen at the Rose Garden. You can park there, but I would take MAX (train) to the Rose Garden because it stops right across the street. Oh, and if you park downtown and take MAX across, it's free (it's part of the "fareless square".)
Forest Park
by yonsei
I'm not sure where the main entrance to Forest Park is -- I have a friend who lives next to it and my entrance is her backyard. Anyway, this is the largest urban wilderness park in America, and despite the annoying horns and whistles that come from the train tracks along the river it still makes good hiking and exploring.
