The State Capitol, it is a beautiful marble structure of a contemporary design, There are murals of historic events in Oregon and U.S. history adorn the interior walls. There is a wonderful view of the Willamette Valley from the dome, which is adorned with a golden statue of a pioneer. Murals
Hours are 8 am to 5 pm weekdays from Memorial Day through Labor Day and tours are available every 30 minutes from 9 to 5 except at noon.
There is no charge for admission or for the tours. Climbing all those stairs inside the dome of the State Capitol, to an excellent view.
When you're up at Clear Lake,...

When you're up at Clear Lake, drive down a mile and see Sahalie Falls on the McKensie River. Be sure and walk down the path a ways. The river there is very wild! If you walk far enough, you'll come to the top of another waterfall.
Waldo Park and Tree

This little park, at the intersection of Union Street NE and Summer Street NE, preserves a tree planted by a Salem pioneer in 1872. As the roads have gotten wider and the rest of the city has developed around the tree, one edge of the tree almost touches Summer Street.
The surrounding trees make it difficult to find the entire tree in photographs taken from a distance far enough to show the entire tree.
Willamette Queen

I will admit that I have never taken one of their river cruises. However, the price of $35 for a river cruise plus lunch seems like a very good deal compared to what some of the similar river boats in Portland are charging. Some day, I will go on one of these trips, but not yet.
The boat departs from Salem's Riverfront Park, which is very easy to get to from downtown.
Downtown Salem: The Capitol Center Building

The 15 story Capitol Center Building is the tallest commercial building in Salem. The art deco style architecture typifies the period in which it was built--1927. Designed by Leigh L. Dougan, and orginally the Old First National Bank Building, this structure was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The construction of the building was financed by Thomas A. Livesley who had originally made his fortune by growing hops. Also known as the Capitol Tower, the building was renovated by the Morse Bros in 1986, and then purchased in 2003 by Roger Yost for $4.65 million. Yost had already purchased the nearby Reed Opera House, and has done extensive renovation work to both historic buildings. The Capitol Tower is built of reinforced concrete clad in a pinkish sandstone. Gargoyales decorate the top of the exterior. Unfortunately, the building was closed by the time of my visit, but I understand the 5 floor interior mahogany wood work is original and outstanding.
