Harrisburg has coalesced from many smaller communities in its growth to become the capital city of Pennsylvania. Some of those small communities have been absorbed into larger neighbors but today there still are a dozen distinct neighborhoods within the big city.

These neighborhoods are:
Allison Hill... oldest neighborhood that remains; Mount Pleasant area with tree-lined residential streets where people with a wide diversity of ethnic backgrounds live
Bellevue Park... planned community with wooded lots and winding roads and cul-de-sacs; mansions are prevelant in his very upscale area
Camp Curtin... on the north of Harrisburg, abutting Uptown
Capitol District... the region immediately surrounding the Capitol building; Forster St. to State St. and 3rd St. to the Susquehanna River
Central Business District (Downtown Harrisburg)... runs from the Capitol District to the Susquehana River and from Shipoke to Midtown to I-83
City Island... in the Susquehanna River
East Harrisburg... I-83 to the Capital Area Greenbelt and Susquehanna Township to Allison Hill
Midtown... Forster Street to Maclay Street and 7th Street to the Susquehanna River
Northern Tier...
Shipoke... the smallest of the Harrisburg neighborhoods; I-83 to Paxton Street and Race Street to the Susquehanna River
South Harrisburg...
Uptown... ZIPCODE 17110; includes parts of the Susquehanna River and the AMtrak rail lines

Broad Street Market

Thisis something you can only do from Tuesday to Saturdays but it is well worth it if you find yourself hungry downtown and needing a break from the usual restaurant row.
It is located on 3rd and Verbeek street which is basically a 15 minute walk from the capitol building.
Its two large one room pavilions with an assortment of ethnic eateries to chose from...I personally recommend 'passage to india' to satisfy your eager and deserving appetites.
The market does also provide some fresh fruit/vegetables/dairy products from farmers in that come in from the surrounding areas.

Harrisburg is Pennsylvania's capital it has one of the shallows rivers in the world, it is called the Susquehanna river. You can walk accrossed it on a bridge that takes you from one side of Harrisburg to another.
