Days Inn: Decent Budget Hotel in New Stanton

by Basaic

This was a nice enough hotel with a few extras like a small refrigerator and a microwave. The drawback was the crappy, intermittent Internet.

America's Best Value: Nice Motel in Oil City

by Basaic

This is a nice hotel with a few extras in the rooms like a small refrigerator and a microwave. The lobby was not that impressive but the room was pretty nice. A decent value at $77 as of August 2011.

Italian Restaurant in the hotel but it was closed the day I was there. Nice view of river and park from some rooms.

Melody Motor Lodge: Avoid in Connellsville

by Basaic

This is a bare bones motel with a rather low price. The room had no extras but was clean and adequate. The problem came when I was awakened by the lady running the motel entering the room with a key and saying that tenants were complaining because there was a smoky smell coming from the Central Air and accusing me of smoking (I am a non-smoker). It is not possible to determine where the smell is coming from with Central Air it could have been from a smoking room. The lady loudly accused me of smoking in a non-smoking room and threatened me with a $1500 fine (I think she accused other guests too). I called the credit card company to prevent this possibility. The room was $53 as of August 2011 but under the circumstances was not worth it.

Best Western: Nice Motel in Bradford

by Basaic

This is a nice hotel and they were undergoing a renovation to improve part of the facilities. The work was fairly discreet and did not adversely affect things except near the lobby. The room was nice and had a small refrigerator and a microwave. The staff was good too. Not cheap at $83 as of August 2011, but worth it.

Nice outdoor pool. Lounge and restaurant inside the hotel.

Comfort Inn: Very Nice Hotel in Duncansville

by Basaic

This Comfort Inn had very nice rooms with lots of extras. They had a small refrigerator and a microwave, flat screen TVs and a comfortable bed. They served one of the better breakfasts I had in any motel on this 100+ day trip. The staff was nice too. Almost a 5 out of 5. A great deal at $77 as of August 2011.

Nice Restaurants in Walking Distance.

Tip Photo
Star Crest Motel: Not the Best in Mansfield

by Basaic

This is an old-fashioned motel. The facilities are older but in decent shape. Not the place to stay if newer ammenities and spotless rooms are needed. Staff was okay. Nice restaurant/bar in walking distance. Internet was intermittent. Too expensive for what you get.

Tip Photo
EconoLodge: Decent Budget Motel in Drums

by Basaic

This was a fairly bare bones motel and although it is older is decently maintained. The owner was nice enough. Not too bad for the traveler worried about their budget.

Tip Photo
Summit Inn: Not the Best Choice in Philadelphia

by Basaic

The Summit Inn did not appear to be in the best part of town, although it also was not the worst. There were no real extras and the price was kinda high. Staff was okay. "Continental Breakfast" was a couple of stale donuts, bad coffee, and orange juice (the best part). I would not stay here again.

CAPTAIN’S WATCH INN: Laurel Highlands Secret

by mtncorg

The little village of Greensboro used to be the home for pottery kilns that took advantage of a large clay deposit along the Monongahela River, turning out stoneware of many types. The manager of one of those kilns lived in this comfortable house - the Crawford House - sitting directly above the river. -William McCormick and his two bulldogs play host here and do a fine job of making you feel at home. Breakfasts are outstanding, bedrooms are comfortable and the large verandah overlooking the river is a grand place to just sit and watch the Monongahela flow by from. Greensboro is a little off the beaten path, but it really is a very suitable alternative to the hosts of motel rooms along US 40 for visiting the many tourist sites in the Laurel Highlands of western Pennsylvania. There is a lot of things to see and do but a short drive away. People heading to football games and other events in nearby Morgantown, West Virginia at the University of West Virginia, could do much better staying here than there, as well. There are a couple of canoes and kayaks available for guests to get out on the river to make the deal even sweeter. This B/B is a great reason to include southwestern Pennsylvania on your travel itinerary.

The verandah, the breakfasts, the kayaks, the bulldogs, the San Marino flag and the amiable host.

WEILER MANSION BED AND BREAKFAST: Home away from home in the Big Valley

by mtncorg

I found the Weiler Mansion B/B while searching the hinterlands around State College looking for a room for a couple of nights during a football weekend at Penn State. The house dates back to the early 1800’s and turned out to be an excellent alternative to the run-of-the-mill motels in State College that grossly inflate their prices on football weekends - on the order of five times higher! Sitting up on the west edge of Jack’s Mountain, the house overlooks the Big Valley - also known as the Kishacoquillas or Kish Valley. The valley is an anticlinal valley lying between Jack’s Mountain and Stone Mountain and is home to several fairly large groups - at least five separate orders - of Old Order Amish.

Rooms inside the house are quite large and the breakfasts that Claudia cooks up are quite the treat. There were eggs, sausages, ham, pies - including the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch Shoofly Pie - among other treats to be seen. The B/B is a working farm and as you drive up, the cows gather about expecting you to feed them. A wonderful front porch full of rockers allow you to sit back and take in the whole pastoral Big Valley scene. Belleville is the closest town - about five miles north where there is a large weekly farmers’ market on Wednesdays that is very popular - and if you are heading to State College, it is about a half hour and two mountains to the north.

Shoofly Pie, Amish neighbors, front porch rockers, friendly cows and wonderful hosts.
