Travel Tips for Jim Thorpe
Hiking up the Glen Onoko trail
by danmcf
Just across the river from the historic center of Jim Thorpe is the Glen Onoko access point to the Lehigh Gorge State Park.
There's a trail that follows the Glen Onoko waterfall all the way up the mountainside.
In places the trail is well marked, but as you approach the top it gets a bit rough - be prepared. Good hiking boots would be helpful.

Jim Thorpe, 'The Switzerland of Pennsylvania'. Originally named 'Mauch Chunk', the town took on Jim Thorpe as its Champion and changed its name in hopes of generating some tourism dollars. The dollars didn't really materialize until after Hollywood dumped a bunch of money to spruce up the town for the movie 'The Molly Maguires' which was filmed in town and several surrounding communities (including Ekley, see my Hazleton page).
Besides site seeing and shopping, this area is great for the active person. Whitewater rafting, biking, hiking, camping can all be had just a short distance from Jim Thorpe.
(Check out the view from 'Flagstaff' a lookout and nightclub. It affords you a great view of Jim Thorpe)
