Beszél magyarul? Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

by mean_green_leftovers

I am studying these two languages and am looking for anyone who is interested in speaking them with me to improve.
My Hungarian is very beginner, so if anyone who doesn't know it and wants to learn, you wouldn't have far to catch up and I have an extra book.

RE: Beszél magyarul? Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Amish and Mennonite families may speak a form of German; however, it is called "Pennsylvania Dutch" and is different than the German of Germany. Our German family from Germany visited Lancaster with us and spoke German to an older Amish lady. She understood our German; however, our relative says that they are slightly different.

Travel Tips for Lancaster

The buggies....

by GUYON

have a look to the buggies. The Amishes have no car but accept to be the passenger of one driven by somebodyelse. This buggy was parked close to an Amish supermarket vending goods agreed by the religious rules. I also saw an Amish man on a scooter, without motor, of course ... (unfortunatly, I take a video, not a photograph).

Green Dragon Farmer's Market...

Green Dragon Farmer's Market (Fridays only)
Outside of Ephrata, this is a fabulous spot to check out Amish and Mennonites in a natural environment. Drive up 272 North and watch for the huge green dragon sign. Go for supper. They have great delis and fried food.

TOMB OF JAMES BUCHANAN

by mtncorg

James Buchanan’s grave is here at Woodward Hill. Woodward Hill and Lancaster Cemeteries meld together to for a regular necropolis on the south side of town. Signs point out the beginning of the way to Old Buck’s grave, but you need to look for the small chapel in the middle of the cemetery. Buchanan is buried on the northeast side of this chapel - look for the flagpole beside his grave. Once a year - April 23 in this case - on each President’s birthday, there is a Federal honor guard that places a wreath at the burial site.

LANCASTER THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

by mtncorg

Many colleges that sprang up in early America did so in combination with seminaries that were developed to provide theological training to prospective clergy. Lancaster Theological Seminary was founded in 1825 and originally associated with Dickinson College - James Buchanan’s alma mater - in nearby Carlisle. The Seminary moved to York, Mercersburg and finally, here to Lancaster in 1871. The present campus across the street from Franklin & Marshall College dates to 1894. Lancaster Theological Seminary was the sole seminary for the German Reformed Church for most of its history. When the Reformed and Evangelical Churches merged in 1934, it became one of three. Further religious mergers - the Evangelical and Reformed Church with most of the Congregational Christian Churches in 1957 - make in now one of seven seminaries serving the United Church of Christ.

Quilts Handcrafts

by keeweechic

The Amish and Mennonite women have been creating beautiful quilts since the mid-1800's. They are said to be an expression of frugality and not only serve a practical and functional purpose, but it is a form of entertainment as well.

Groups of women get together for a quilting bees which is a form of socializing and relaxing for these women to catch up on all the news. Of course these days it has become a business venture.
