http://www.ejbowmanhouse.com/ourhomedirections.htm has info on the left-hand menu.

Or:

Seems to be a bit of a tourist-thing: lots of b&bs/inns offer 'dinner with an Amish family' if you google 'dinner amish lancaster'! :-)

You can have dinner with real Amish families or there are plenty of restaurants that offer typical "Amish "fare- the traditional dishes, 7 sweets and sours, shoefly pie, etc. GoodnPlenty and Yoder's come to mind. There is also the Amish market which hosts delis and all sorts of Amish products to taste and try. I'm not sure which experience you are looking for- Did you know there is also a motel where the accomodations are each railroad cars fitted out into rooms?

Travel Tips for Lancaster

Plenty of tourist offices

by acemj

As I was driving around Lancaster County, I noticed that each town has an easy to find visitor center, so if you want to pick up free brochures and get some reliable information it's a good idea to make a quick stop. The Visitor Center in downtown Lancaster is located on S. Queen Street and can be reached at 717.397.3531.

National Toy Train Museum

by seagoingJLW

See the toy train museum in Strasburg. The museum is headquarters for the Train Collectors Association.

This is a large collection of floor toys, electric trains, and train-related accessories.

There are five operating layouts, Standard, O, S, G, and HO.

A continuously running video show offers cartoons and comedy films about toy trains.

The museum is located at 300 Paradise Lane in Strasburg.

We had lunch in the Quarryville Family Restaurant. This is a typical American style cafe but it had regional items that had never had before - Shoo Fly Pie, Philly Cheese Steaks and something else ( I have forgotten the name) which the waitress had trouble describing. Apparently it was an aquired taste - ususlly something to avoid!
Since it is a typical American cafe, you can get an idea of what the locals are like and what sort of foods are eaten in the area. I had a sandwich with corned beef and saurkraut on rye bread. GF had a Philly cheese steak which was quite tastey. For dessert, I had the Shoo Fly Pie. This is a type of pie with a sort of molasses filling. It was too rich for me - maybe a scoop of ice cream would have helped!

FRANKLIN & MARSHALL COLLEGE

by mtncorg

F&M is the 17th oldest college in the U.S. with slightly under 2000 students in attendance. Chartered in 1787 on the site of a former brewery in Lancaster, the school was originally named after Benjamin Franklin and was established as a German college to help German immigrants to assimilate into the culture of the U.S.. The school featured bilingual instruction - German/English - and was the first American coeducation college - though it shortly thereafter became male only until 1969. Marshall College opened in Mercersburg in 1836, being named after Chief Justice John Marshall, who had died one year previously. Both schools merged in 1853 to help remedy financial problems and James Buchanan - soon to become President - was named president of the first F&M board of trustees. The most of the distinctive building of the new school was the Recitation Hall - today, Old Main - built upon what was ‘Gallows Hill’ - today, College Hill. The school has been secular and coeducational since 1969.

Take A Balloon Ride

by Mikebb

For some reason I woke up at 6am and looked out the window into the parkland to see a balloon lying on the ground ready to be inflated. Two minutes later I was outside and only 40 metres from the balloon as it was just leaving the ground and commencing its journey.

Quickly took a dozen photos and thought to myself how lucky I was to witness this.
