I will be taking the train to Lancaster in August and would like to find a tour or transportation into the surrounding areas for photos. Is it possible to hire a carriage to take you around??

Re: country tours

Hello

If this were what you’re looking for, I would recommend this particular tour, which I have been on myself. “Horse Drawn, Buggy” You can have your own private buggy as couples or families you may have your choice of buggies or open wagons. The tour is specifically touring live working Amish farms and communities, and i'm sure it's possible to arrange your own mini tour! Contact the provider direct to obtain your quote at;

Let me make one minor request

> find a tour or transportation into the surrounding areas for photos

I'm going to presume you're hoping to see Amish people. Please be aware of, AND RESPECT, the fact that Amish have an absolute prohibition on being photographed. Taking their picture while they are out in their fields or riding their buggies would be like someone taking your picture while you are having a shower. If you can't respect their wishes, at least be discreet about your violation of their privacy.

Travel Tips for Lancaster

The difference between the Old Order Anabaptists

by Knight_Kadosh

The Old Order Mennonite men remain clean-shaven all through life, while the Old Order Amish men, once married; grow beards, never sporting a mustache. The upper lip is always clean-shaven despite the long beards, denoting they are married men. Unmarried Old Order Amish men remain clean-shaven while in singleness. The women of these groups never cut their hair during their life, and it is only let down for their husbands, and then, only in private. They will always be seen wearing a covering over their top knotted hair. The men and boys always wear hats.

Henry Wilbur and the Chocolate Factory

by kacooke

Years ago, on one of our trips to Lancaster, my mom, my sister, my aunt Sarah, my cousin Jessica, and I stopped off at a little chocolate factory in Lititz. It was neat to see how chocolate was made and to be in a place where there were so many different forms of chocolate. I thought I was in heaven. The next time you're in Lancaster, I highly recommend you make a detour to:

Wilbur Chocolate Candy Americana Museum
48 N. Broad St., Lititz, PA 17543

Internet Cafe

by acemj about Cafe Aroma Borealis

I didn't go here, but I walked by (it's inside a shopping mall) and notice the exposed brick walls and the cozy atmosphere. It also has internet access, a key component for any self-respecting VT member.

Farming the Amish Way

by keeweechic

There are no big combines working the land. Everyone in the family pitches in to prepared the land and bring in the crops although gardening and weeding are usually left exclusively to the women and children.
