Furniture?

by blaetcyap

What are some good places to purchase authentic amish furniture ,entertainment center cabinet to be precise?

RE: Furniture?

by KalamazooJohn

I notice you have not had any replies for a week. I used to live in Lancaster and though I have been all around the tourist areas, I can't say I would know where to buy furniture. Most people would look in the shops in Intercourse or other Yonie towns, but I should imagine prices are not that good. It seems funny to want to buy an Amish entertainment center!!! Not something you would find in their homes.

Here it is!

by ringleader

Oh my, please do look at the Amish Country Home Funiture store in New Holland. It is right by Shady Maple Smorgasboard on Route 23. We bought our dining room table and chairs from them, and they matched the stain of our other furniture in the dining room free of charge. We wanted a table that could stretch from here to the moon to accommodate our family and guests. This wasn't a problem as Amish and Mennonite families are large, and we can easily sit 14 at our dining room table when fully extended.

They have bedroom furniture, dining sets, rocking chairs... you name it, you most likely can find it.

Another place we purchased an inexpensive pie cabinet was at the Bird-in-Hand farmers' market on Rt. 340. There is a small furniture store there, but it isn't anywhere near the type of furniture available at the one in New Holland.

Travel Tips for Lancaster

Lancaster Tip

by oneonta_ni

A very vivid memory is of standing in front of the house that my great-great-great grandfather lived in (and possibly built) and talking to the Amish family that live there. They were interesting people and told us about being attacked by non-Amish people. Apparently, several times, a car drove past and threw large rocks through the windows where the family were sleeping. The family had to put grills over the window to prevent further attacks.

Ephrata Cloister

by acemj

The Ephrata Cloister was founded in 1732 and was one of America's oldest communal societies. It began when Conrad Beissel broke from the Conestoga congregation in Lancaster (German Baptist ) and created his own faith which was more emotional and mystical in nature. He established the cloister here along the Cocalico Creek. After Beissel died in 1768, things went downhill for the community, but remnants of them survived until 1934.

How to get there: I-76 West to Exit 21. Rt. 222 South to Ephrata to Rt. 322 (Main St.) West. About 2 miles to Cloister.

Hamish cuisine

by GUYON about Dienner's Country Restaurant

Dienner's Country Restaurant. An Amish restaurant.
Unexpensive (18$ for 3 persons). We were served by Amish women. They accept the credit cards (surprising, no ???) All can you eat buffet to 4$. Shoo fly pie : a molasses pie very sugared. For this reason, it attracts the flies which are chased away by a hand movement and a scream :'Shoo ... the flies' (se non è vero, è ben trovato).

Closed early: 6pm (8pm on Friday).

Interesting architecture

by acemj

The rain preventing me from really exploring the city on foot the way I would have liked to, but I did walk around a four square block area around Penn Square and noticed a lot of art galleries and interesting architecture like this building.

Clothing - Women

by keeweechic

Women can be seen dressed in bright purple apron, orange neckerchief, or (on Sunday) white caps without ruffle, or borders and white neckerchiefs, all wearing aprons.

Dresses are ankle length and they are always plain with no patterns or buttons. The old treddle sewing machine is used as they have no electricity.
