Meadville - Small town of contradictions

by vertov

"I work here."

If you read my bio, it says I live in Erie, which is true. However, I work in Meadville.

Meadville is a very contradictory small town. It is definitely a rural Pennsylvania/Ohio border land town, which is different even from central PA or the Pittsburgh area. It has an odd character all it's own.

Allegheny College, one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the nation, gives Meadville a intellectual quality, but even that isn't the stereotypical college influence.

The town is also a hub of tool-die shops, which give it an industrial feel, but without the big "factory" mentality.

Meadville's contradictions can be best summed up by someone visiting, who might expect rural charm, a gritty industrial base, and a high brow collegiate atmosphere. All at once, you get all of that, but yet none of it as much as you'd expect. It makes for an odd contradiction. The three qualities don't openly conflict nor blend nicely, they just kind of dilute each other in the pea soup that is Meadville.

Finally - don't let the uneven review detract if you're a prospective student at Allegheny, or thinking of moving here. The qualities I described are great for someone who is looking for a place to stand out and be noticed. The final contradiction is that there is an undeniable streak of dynamism to the town, which you wouldn't expect with its quiet and diluted nature. It's a conservative town that occasionally busts out and does something amazing.
