Phila to NYC Transportation

by mariecarmen

I am planning a trip from Philadelphia to NYC with my daughter and a friend of her. I check the Amtrak ways but it was too expensive for me. What is the easiest and safety way to go there?

Hi - less expensive than the trains are buses. Check www.megabus.com or www.boltbus.com - they are both very reasonably priced. The earlier you book, the less expensive it will be. Even though it's a short trip, I'd take the bus in the day - you shouldn't have to worry about safety.

Yes, Donna is right as usual. I have taken this Boltbus to Boston and back, last summer, for the princely sum of $24 Round Trip. I found it to be reliable and comfy.

The easiest is Amtrak which you just said is too expensive.

Note that the bus is subject to traffic conditions both on the NJ Turnpike and at the Lincoln Tunnel. The merge at exit 8A of the NJ Turnpike is particualarly bad especially on a Friday afternoon.

I have often seen the entry to the Lincoln Tunnel backed up all the way from the NJ Turnpike exit to the helix with the delay being at least an hour. Weekends are especially bad.

There are several bus companies that run Philly to NYC route - Chinatown Bus, BoltBus, etc. Of course, Greyhound Bus. All are very inexpensive, but please understand that you get what you pay for in terms of comfort and timeliness. Since I hate driving into NYC and I travel on a tight budget, these buses are ok with me.

Too expensive? NJ Transit from 30th street to NYC Penn station is $15.50 one way and half that for children. It's only a couple of dollars more than the buses and a whole lot faster, safer, comfortable and easier. I dont think you can find better or safer.

Travel Tips for Philadelphia

Phabulous Philly

by kazander

We found Philadelphia to be a great city, surprisingly quiet and not filled with traffic. Maybe it was just the weekend we visited, or the fact that we are used to heading into New York when visiting "the city", but it was very relaxed.
Another wonderful thing about Philly is that is it filled with art. Everywhere you look it seems, there is a mural or a sculpture.

See the Independence Hall, where the Liberty Bell is located. Philadelphia has wonderful restaurants, and many beautiful suburbs surrounding the city. It is also a day trip away from many other places, such as New York City, the New Jersey Shore, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.

I go on a holiday and find that I'm looking at my old house all over again. Here is Betsy Ross's kitchen which closely resembles the fireplace we just restored in our old house. I'm wishing for all the tools and pans that are in the Betsy house. We have a few wonderful old pieces, but these museums really make me drool. I'm a crazy person when it comes to this stuff.

attend the presentation of the Liberty Bell by the Ranger. You will know why the Bell is broken. But I prefer the complete report of Ladyfisher I copy on the Travelogue. The visit is free and, during the high season there is a line. The Liberty Bell pavillion is in front of the Independence Hall.
