Pittsburg for 1/2 day

by fairlight

Hello all,

My sister and I might be in Pittsburgh for half-day this Saturday. We've never been to Pittsburgh before. I was thinking about going to Station square and doing duck tours and riding up the incline to Mount Washington. Little about ourselves: we like taking walks, beautiful scenery, architecture, quite towns and good food. I have several questions:

Can we walk from Station square to the incline?
Can anyone suggest any good places for lunch (no chains)

We would prefer to park and just walk around. Are any good walks in that area?

Thank you again

Hi Fairlight

I have some answers for you;
1.) Yes, one of the two inclines is directly across from Station Square (walking distance).
2.) Many places for lunch right in Station Square and Bessemer Court (an area beside Station Square along the river). My favorite is the Gandy Dancer or the Grand Concourse.
3.) Station Square provides a nice area for walking as does Mount Washington once you ride up the incline.

Enjoy your trip.

Cheers!

Sean

The Duquesne Incline is right across the street from Station Square. Sunset is a great time to get up to Mount Washington because it yields beautiful western views.
Primanti Brothers is a place that I would drive out of my to get to. Classic, fantastic Pittsburgh food. There isn't one at Station Square, but there are two Downtown and one just down the road on South Carson. http://www.primantibros.com
Regarding architecture, there are a lot of very cool neighborhoods in Pittsburgh with great architecture. The South Side Flats (South Carson) is one, but also the Strip District, just east of Downtown, is nice with its converted warehouses. Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh campus is a must-see also. It's just really interesting.

Bocmaxima (Colin) was right on with the recommendation to dine at Primanti Brothers. I forgot all about it. Although you said no chains, this is a Pittsburgh thing. The original (and the one I would recommend) is located in the strip district. They call it the strip because it is the warehouse and dock district and somewhat of an eclectic area. Not full of adult stores and gentleman's clubs like the name indicates. It looks kind of like a greasy spoon but the sandwiches are made with the coleslaw and fries right on the sandwich. They are the best!

Cheers

Travel Tips for Pittsburgh

Top Recommendations

My top recommendations for Pittsburgh are the Carnegie Museum of Natural History's dinosaur exhibit, and while you're there, the Carnegie Museum of Art's rotating exhibit. For contemporary art, go to the Mattress Factory (and if you like Andy Warhol, go to his museum). Go up the incline and view the city from Mt. Washington.
I put more recommendations by interest on my travel page.

Golden Triangle

by GUYON

See the Golden Triangle. It is the most beautiful part of Pittsburgh. In Summer, the trees hide partly the view from Mount Washington. On the other bank of the Allegheny River , there is the Three Rivers Stadium dedicated to the base ball and the local team : the Pirates.

Pittsburghese

What is Pittsburghese? It's the unofficial language of the Steel City. From da Sahside (South Side) to Sliberty (East Liberty), you can find Picksburghers speaking just like this. Every tahn (town) has its own flavor, and this is just one of ours. So if you are planning to visit Dahntahn (Downtown) or just catch a Stillers (Steelers) game we suggest you learn the language of the 'Burgh.

So quit jaggin' around already! Click sumpin!

Schenley Park

by estargrl88

For a bit of recreation while on vacation, I would suggest Schenley Park. It has tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool (in the summer, though it gets pretty crowded and is not the best place for exercise), an ice skating rink in winter, a playground, a golf course, and trails for jogging/biking.

The Meadows

by jls274

Horse racetrack and Casino- I have a lot of great memories of the racetrack as a kid- on special days they had pony rides and you could always go to the barn to check out the horses before race time.

The Casino is new and pretty awesome. Unlike Mountaineer (the next closest one) it has the feel of a real casino like in AC.
