Memorial to Flight 93 Heroes
Few even know that there is a Temporary Memorial to the heroes of Flight 93, who took action against the terrorist-hijackers on 9/11. About 15 miles north-east of Somerset, you will find this memorial site, which is a designated National Memorial through the National Park Service. Over the next 10 years, the chosen design will be built and officially opened to the public. Right now, it is a fairly remote location (directions available through their website, or by asking for a copy when you exit the PA Turnpike) on private property. The day I visited was rainy and cold, yet there were people coming and going, as well as a volunteer on-duty to answer questions and collect donations. It is a very moving site, not to be missed if you're ever anywhere near Pittsburgh or Altoona and have about an hour to make this memorable journey!
