When we came to State College for the East Coast Volleyball Championships, the rooms for the teams' families had been booked in advance in a block. The city or tournament officials actually assigned hotels to the teams. So we were pretty disappointed when we first learned we were assigned a Motel 6.
We were very pleasantly surprised with the hotel in reality! I could even say, lucky!! We arrived later in the evening after a 4 hour drive, so when we found a fairly new hotel with a large room, very clean with a clean, large bathroom, we were pretty happy. The room had 2 double beds, a good TV, a desk/table with 2 chairs, a closet area, air-conditioning and phone. Best of all it had fitted bottom sheets!!!!!
The bathroom had plenty of towels and 2 small bars of soap. However, a lot of the amenities that we take for granted now with other hotel chains were missing: a clock, a hair-dryer, tissues, a coffee-maker, a comfortable lounge-type chair, and bathroom toiletries such as shampoo, shower cap, etc. In the end, it didn't matter that much. I found that by asking at the reception desk, you could get shampoo and a few other small items, plus extra towels if needed, and you could ask for a wake-up call for the morning.
Coffee, hot tea, and hot chocolate are always available in a section of the lobby where there are plenty of tables and chairs and a good TV. Local newspapers, brochures, restaurant info, etc., are also available in the lobby. Because the hotel was almost totally occupied by volleyball teams and their families, the hotel went beyond the call of duty and brought in dozens and dozens of fresh doughnuts daily, plus orange juice!!!
The reception/reservation desk staff were extremely helpful and courteous.
Good location to get to the PSU campus, restaurants, etc. Plenty of free parking too!!
Unique Quality: Because of the number of people in town for the Volleyball Championships, the room rate was more expensive than usual, but I thought we got good value for our money! (Usually the rate is about $60 for 4 people; we paid $109 for 3 people. Spring, 2007 prices.)
The fitted sheets were a winner with me (I hate unfitted bottom sheets!) The large room and bathroom were a definite plus. The always-available hot beverages in the lobby were great. The nice staff made things pleasant, even when we had to return to our room TWICE after already checking out!! The doughnuts made everyone happy!
If what you're looking for is clean, with a good location, and reasonable rates, then Motel 6 just might be for you!!
