Sleep Inn - Good Location and Great Value!!

UPDATE:
In early 2011, the Sleep Inn at State College began a renovation of the Lobby, Breakfast area, and all rooms. Pictures of a renovated room have now been added. The changes have been very well done, and have made the rooms exceptionally comfortable, relaxing and cozy. We have stayed at this hotel many times, and it has never disappointed us!
Pictures of Lobby and Breakfast area to follow soon.

For the 3-day Memorial Day weekend (2009) during the volleyball championships, virtually every hotel in the town of State College is filled to capacity, so booking in advance is a necessity. We booked our room almost 4 months in advance. We had a choice of 2 hotels, and chose the SLEEP INN because it had the lower price. We weren't disappointed in the least; in fact, we were extremely happy with our first experience with this hotel!!!

The dull exterior of the hotel should not discourage you from booking a room here because the rooms are very, very nice for the money in my opinion. (In fact, hands down, it beats a Sheraton Four Points we stayed in recently.) After 5 long hours of driving, we wanted some creature comforts and that's exactly what we found in our room!! Warm earth-tones of beige, rust, brown and cream created a beautiful palette for 2 double beds with cozy bed linens, nice artwork on the walls, and lovely draperies and carpet. A fabulous work desk, chifferobe, chest and cabinets in warm, cherry-tone wood finished the room off beautifully.

A nice dressing area with sink, hand towels & toiletries also provided space for a coffeemaker. The shower & toilet room were separate and worked very well for the 2 of us (the volleychick was staying in the Penn State dorms). We found that the microwave and small refrigerator housed in the own cherry-tone cabinet were a real bonus since we were staying for 3 nights! However, the hotel offers a free continental breakfast daily. The breakfast includes cold cereal, or hot instant oatmeal, bagels, muffins, fresh fruit, yougurt, several types of juice, and the coffee and tea are available around the clock.

Free daily newspapers, and a computer with free wi-fi are just off the lobby. Rooms also come with free wi-fi, local calls, iron & ironing board and a guest laundry is available.

Unique Quality: Arriving in the early evening, we found check-in to be quick and efficient and the desk service friendly. When we needed help making the connection with the free wi-fi, the front desk staff was very helpful!

We found all aspects of this hotel to our liking: a comfortable, well-decorated room with a thoughtful layout; a terrific shower; the refrigerator, microwave, in-room coffeemaker, and free continental breakfast; a good location; an extremely reasonable price (the price may be higher during football season).

The hotel is located near several restaurants and within a very few minutes of downtown State College and the university.

UPDATE - June 30, 2010: For our latest stay in June, 2010, we got a rated of $59.95 per night with tax. Be aware that during busy times of the year such as Penn State students move-in weekend, Parents' Weekend, and during all Penn State University home football game weekends, the rate will increase significantly based on demand. If your stay falls on such a weekend, book as early in advance as possible.

Look for internet specials, and coupons in hotel deal booklets mostly found on interstate highway rest stops! We got a group rate of $85 +tax per night (Memorial Day weekend, 2009 price) which we thought was more than fair during a Holiday weekend when there was a big event in town. However, a check of the online rates for dates later this summer turned up even less expensive rates.

  • Opinion of Price: less expensive than average
