Travel Tips for Wilkes-Barre

Fine Arts Fiesta

by dorkthethird

The Fine Arts Fiesta happens every May in downtown Wilkes Barre on the square where Main and Market Street meet. The festival lasts about a week. The festival has over 50 years of history and features crafts and artwork from artists from around the country!

Local artists that are members of the Wyoming Valley Art League offer an open air exhibit of their selected works which is judged in several catagories.

Great food is everywhere! The local Greek church makes excellent food. (Their sister church in Scranton hold the annual Greek Food Festival, see my tip.) Usually, ethnic Lebanese, Jersey Shore favorites (from actual boardwalk shops) and the famed Nico's Pizza are all present.

There is usually a special board hung somewhere with a schedule of children's activites, from puppet shows to hands-on craft activites.

Wandering jugglers, clowns and musicians can be found inbetween artist's tents around the square.

Pets welcome, but do respect others and the artists' works!

Please do not eat over someone's artwork and keep dogs and other pets out of their display tents.

Trails along the river, etc.

by acemj

On the Kingston side of the Susquehanna River just across the Market Street bridge, you'll find a long trail that is perfect for walking, jogging, biking or rollerblading.

Wilkes-Barre is also very close to a major Nascar speedway, the Pocono International Raceway. The track is a 2.5 mile, non-oval (i.e. not excruciatingly boring to watch) track, so someday I might actually consider going to a race here. Pocono is located south of exit 284 (old exit 43) of Interstate 80, just east Wilkes-Barre. Take I-80 to exit 284, and head south on SR 115 for a couple of miles. The track will be to your left, on Long Pond Road.

Ricketts Glen State Park

by acemj

Just a little over a half hour to the West of Wilkes-Barre, you'll find a fantastic state park. Ricketts Glen has miles of trails, a large lake for swimming and fishing, camping, cabins, horseback riding and much more. I spent a day there mostly hiking the 7.2 mile Falls Trail, which is lined with 22 waterfalls and is great for any nature lover. Check out the official Ricketts Glen website or check out my VT page for more details and photos.

My Hometown

by Daisiedoll

I've lived in the Wilkes-Barre area my whole life. The area itself is typically 2-3 years behind New York City. There isn't much here that could entice a tourist to come here just for "here". All the cities and towns in the Wilkes-Bare/Scranton area run into one another and I can help you find things to do if you are here on business, for a NASCAR race, for skiing, or whatever!

We are on the edge of the Poconos; close to the Pocono NASCAR raceway, tons of places to ski, tons of lakes and unique touristy things that will educate and teach you about the history of the area.

You won't be without the creature comforts of home here. We've got all the restaurants and shopping you'd expect from any area of significant size.
