Travel Tips for Wilkes-Barre

Cool buildings

by acemj

In an hour or two, you can take a self-guided walking tour of quite a good number of interesting and historic buildings in Wilkes-Barre. Many of them are religious buildings, but if you head over to the west of town, you'll find a bunch of big old houses and other buildings of some architectural note in the River Street Historic District. A walk down Franklin Street (one block off of River Street) will also reveal some nice buildings. Check out my Cool Buildings travelogue below for some photos.

Jim Thorpe, PA

by acemj

About 45 minutes south of Wilkes-Barre just off of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, you'll find a picturesque little mountain town called Jim Thorpe. The setting is sublime in a valley in the shadows of the Pocono Mountains along the banks of the winding Lehigh River. The town's historic district is full of charming shops, restaurants and interesting Victorian architecture. If you can get a room here, do it. It's a great base of exploration for the surrounding area.

Wilkes-Barre, PA

by acemj

Wilkes-Barre is on the southern end of the greater Wilkes-Barre-Scranton area in northeastern, Pennsylvania. The town of Wilkes-Barre isn't much of a tourist destination, but if you're heading up to the Poconos or to one of the areas state parks, it's an interesting enough place to spend a couple hours. I've kept this page suitably short to match the time I spent in Wilkes-Barre. I hope you enjoy the virtual look as much as I enjoyed my quick tour or this quiet town on the edge of the Susquehanna River.

Monuments at Court House

by acemj

The Ellen Webster Palmer statue in front of the Luzern County Courthouse commemorates the life of the woman who established the Boys' Industrial Association to help working boys of the area. Palmer would spend her nights teaching the boys after they spent their long hard days picking rock from coal.
