1661 House: another great view
I haven't stayed here but the Inn is owned by the family who owns the Hotel Manisses, so we had breakfast buffet and afternoon wine & cheese in this building while staying at the Manisses. What a spot! Fabulous foods, wonderful views.....a feeling of total luxury and relaxation.
They now advertise a Champagne Breakfast Buffet every morning, all season long. Mmmmm!!

The Atlantic Inn: High above the ocean
They advertise "spectacular view...tapas, cocktails and a sunset....your table reserved for the evening....no rush... no worries."
The Atlantic is a victorian beauty perched on the hill above the Atlantic Ocean with a sweeping lawn and adirondack chairs to sit out in the sun....or a porch to cool off in the shade. Beautiful structure...never stayed there, but the adirondacks have been favorites for me.

Atlantic Inn: Inn on the hill
My wife and I love the Atlantic Inn. We saw it one when visiting when we were young and vowed to come back one day and stay there. Well...ten years later, with son in tow, we actually made it back and had a wonderful time. The inn is positioned up on a hill that faces the old town with the Long Island Sound and the Rhode Island coast beyond (faces west). In the evenings people (many who are not staying at the inn) congregate on the broad sweeping porch for drinks and cocktails as the sun sets over the sound.
We found the inn (and innkeepers) to be quite charming, including their large dog that often resided on the porch. We stayed in the mini suite that had a small bedroom connecting to a larger bedroom. It was perfect for our small family. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and my wife and I looked forward to getting up early in the morning, when it was still cool, and grabbing some of their delicious coffee out on the porch.
The inn has what is likely the best restaurant on the island. Its not cheap, but worth eating there at least once. There are also tennis courts at the inn, which we took advantage of on numerous occasions. There is also a fire stair that leads to the top of the inn that you can walk up to get fantastic views of the island and the sound. The inn is also very close to the old town (within walking distance) so you don't need to have a car. We rented bikes and that's sufficient to get you around this tiny island. In the evening we just walked to town.

Sullivan House/Harbor House: Avoid the Sullivan House!! (see below too!)
TERRIBLE - NOT RECOMMENDED. The Sullivan House (which owns Harbor House, too; see review below) is perfectly located but I have never received shoddier treatment in my life. No actual person ever appeared to greet us or check on us--we were greeted with a note, that's all. We never received any housekeeping services. Although the house and its views are indeed beautiful, the furnishings and linens are in bad shape, our room was dusty, and worst of all the house was overrun throughout our entire stay with workers preparing the place for a weekend wedding. After looking forward to some peace and quiet on Block Island, we instead had to put up with a fraternity party atmosphere (the workers were often hanging around inside the house, which is quite small--no escape from them) with swearing, spitting, loud and offensive rap music (they wouldn't turn it down when we asked), all day and even past 10 PM at night. We paid a great deal to stay here and we URGE you not to make the same mistake. The experience was horrible and although we called the management, nobody has even apologized to us. Stay away from this place!

Spring House Hotel: Look for the hotel with the red roof
Stayed during the off season. We booked a suite for our party of 5 at $170 per night including a contenental breakfast. Restaurant was open for dinner only and only on the weekends. We did not have our dinner here.
We were in the old wing. Bathrooms were updated but floors were uneven. It was warm enough to have breakfast out on the rear patio on Sunday morning. Very nice with views of the ocean.

Suite Dreams: Stay at Suite Dreams B.I.
Stay at a beautiful rental apartment on Block Island. Located right in town with views from your own deck of Crescent Beach(the best swimming/sunning beach) and Old Harbor. The room is decorated with furnishings from 234 Water- a gift/gallery store located in the same building. The unit is convenient to all the shops and restaurants so you don't really need a car. Suite Dreams has bikes to rent(new mountain bikes) and there is also moped rentals nearby. The room has a queen size Tommy Bahama bed, plasma TV w/ all the directv channels, refridge., microwave, coffee machine, private bath and a deck with comfortable furniture.
This room has great views of all the action on Water Street, views of the beach, harbor and sunsets. The furnishings are really beautiful. Becky, one of the owners is great and will give you all the info you could posibly need!

Love the Harbor House
I stayed at the Harbor House with a bunch of friends - we were at a wedding at the Sullivan House. The whole experience was great. We were right on the water and could not believe the views! The Habor House itself wasn't as elegant as the Sullivan House, but it was a great place for a good price. FIVE STARS FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Harbor House, owned by Sullivan House: be careful of what house you rent
We've been vacationing on Block Island each of the last seven summers. It's a great, laid back place and a lot of fun for all ages. Our string of excellent experiences was ended last year by a very bad rental.
The Harbor House is owned by Mary O'Brien's company, which also ownes the Sullivan House. My wife and young daughter rented the Harbor House last year - $3,000 for the week ($500 a night). They did not have pictures of the inside of the house online, but the Sullivan House looked really nice.
Unfortunately, the Harbor House is not so nice. It was run down and poorly maintained. The house is billed as "sleeping eight, " but had only one working shower. The downstairs bathroom was in such disrepair that the floor around the toilet was "squishy" from what must have been a leak at the base of the toilet. I have pictures at www.blockislandbadrental.com.
The worst thing was there was only one smoke detector and it wasn't working. The electrical system was so old that the rusty fuse panel had glass fuses.
We asked for other lodging, but they had none available. Their agent told us that she spoke with Mrs. O'Brien (who would not speak with us directly) and she agreed to send us a $2,500 refund (we stayed one night). We accepted her offer.
Since all of our other experiences were so good, we found a nice suite at The Atlantic hotel and had a nice vacation.
We never received the check. I called, wrote, faxed and finally received a letter from her attorney who didn't dispute that there were no working fire/smoke detectors, nor did he dispute that we weren't offered a refund - he told us that we had to make our request in writing in a specific period of time - and since we didn't - no refund.
We've rented great rooms from The 1661, the Manases, The Atlantic and The National. We also rented houses from The Atlantic. Everything about these experiences were top notch. Block Island is a great place - just watch out for the Sullivan House/Harbor House!
You can see numerous pictures at www.blockislandbadrental.com.

Rose Farm Inn: Cute B&B up the hill from town.
Clean rooms in newer B&B. Informal afternoon tea with snacks. Light breakfast (cereals, bagels, pastries, juice) included in room rate. Nice downhill walk to harbor for shopping/eating.
