Travel Tips for Newport

Bellevue and the Beaches.

by Toyin

If you have never been to Newport before, you will need to visit the town which if full of activities in summer. If you love shopping, this is it. Also the bellevue Avenue is a must. Then you go to the beach, and get close to nature. During the height of the Victorian Age, between 1840 and 1900, the rich, powerful and famous made Newport the country’s premier summer resort, and Bellevue Avenue the center of society, sport and fashion.

The hour-long tour begins and ends at the Preservation Society’s offices at 424 Bellevue Avenue, with a knowledgeable guide describing each property along the way. Following the tour, visitors receive a ticket to tour The Breakers and any second property of their choice, at their leisure. The Bellevue Mansions ofcourse, and my former school. Also, the Newport Beach.

Thames Street - Waterfront

by Geoff_Wright

Thames Street, bordering the Waterfront, is the main shopping area in Newport. Lined with interesting gift shops, antique shops, and plenty of others to just browse, or purchase your gifts for the folks at home.

Outdoor dining...mmmmmm

by Zmrzlina about Christie's

Fine selection of dishes of all sorts. Eat outside so you can enjoy the sunset (Newport has a west facing waterview) and the live entertainment. However, be warned...this is a very expensive restaurant. If you eat inside you can just get appetizers but the inside is nothing special. I had a simple pasta which can't be screwed up. Lobster bisque was yummy, though. And I know my dinner date enjoyed his salmon very much.

Yummy treats

by Gypsystravels about Kilwin's Chocolate & Ice Cream

We were walking back towards our hotel after some shopping on Bowen's Wharf when I spotted this place. I wanted a small treat to hold me over til dinner, so we popped in to see what they had.

They carry a large selection of caramel corn, chocolates of all sorts (like my fave, the chocolate covered pretzel), caramel apples, assorted candies, chocolate covered rice crispies and of course ice cream..

There was a large line to order, but it definitely was well worth the wait. I settled on a few pieces of the dark chocolate covered pretzels at $1.75 each, a caramel covered pretzel rod at $2.25, some caramel popcorn, I think the bag was $6.95 and a cute gum ball buddy which was $3.50 for Leo's Easter basket.

His SUMMER COTTAGE

by Pawtuxet

Known as the "Gilded Age", this was a time when Newport gleamed with opulance and overabundance. Here we see The Breakers, built by Cornelius Vanderbilt around the 1880's. It sits on 13 acres overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The tour will take you to many of the rooms in the house, including the wonderful kitchen....and is well worth the price of admission. It's amazing to think of this as a "summer cottage", but that is, in fact what it was. EVEN THO IT HAS 70 ROOMS!!!
