Travel Tips for Newport

I just had to add this picture of Mary and VT member Paula (Paulapes), at Beavertail Point on the southern tip of Conanicut Island . This is a little detour from the Highway 138 before crossing yet another bridge (toll) to Newport itself. Because of its exposed location, it was quite breezy, but not cold. We watched someone flying a radio-controlled glider (no motor!!), out over the low cliffs and rocks. He assured us that during the years he had been doing this, he had never lost his airplane in the ocean! Time to move on.

Sailing is a very important part of Newport which has a very rich deep rooted history. You'll get a glimpse of just how important sailing is to Newport when you visit one of the mansions (will be back with that info).

Walking along America's Cup Ave you'll come across hundreds of boats either docked or out on Newport Bay.

Dessert and Drinks

This is your typical nice hotel restaurant and bar although I hear great things about their yet unsampled by me brunch.

I really enjoyed hanging out here that Friday evening because they had both the Red Sox and the Yankees games on.

The service wasn't bad nor was it great. And two of the three desserts I've had here were great. OMFG in the bad way. Had their version of Baked Alaska and it tasted freezer burned and horrible.

I have also had the Lava cake and the Creme Brulee which both were excellent. So I am hoping it was just this one dessert that lead me astray.

Bought tickets at the visitors center. By the way tickets last forever if you do not see all mansions in one trip then you can see them on your next trip. Took trolley using the same 1 day pass I paid for in Providence.

Only saw Breakers and Rosecliff. Although the Breakers was more extravagant I preferred Rosecliff decor both inside and out. It was less gaudy and had more light.

Also took the tourist trolley and saw the outside of other mansions which was nice

Kingscote was built in 1841, nearly 40 years before the Gilded Age (usually regarded as the era between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of World War I). But it is considered one of the Newport Cottages because it was acquired in 1864 by the sea merchant William Henry King, who furnished it with porcelains and textiles accumulated in the China trade. Architect Richard Upjohn designed the mansion in the same Gothic Revival style he used for Trinity Church in New York. The firm of McKim, Mead & White was commissioned to design the 1881 dining room, notable for its Tiffany glass panels. As you drive down Bellevue, the Isaac Bell House is between Kingscote and The Elms.
