More about Hilltop Inn
In the shadow of the Viking Hotel...
Lies a true GEM !!
We were referred to the inn by a friend and from the moment we pulled in were extremely happy.. Located away from the noise of Thames St.. and across from the "trendy" yet overpriced Hotel Viking was the Hilltop Inn..
From the food to the room to the garden in the back, this place was exquisite. We checked in and the innkeeper immediately sat down with us to map out Newport, their restaurant recommendations, and activity ideas were spot on..
We would highly recommend the Hilltop Inn to anyone going to Newport, it may be a bit more expensive then a hotel.. but its like having a home away from home.. and rivals any hotel.. this coming from a New Yorker !!

Romantic and elegant.....
We wanted a special place to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Never having stayed in a B&B before this trip, and being first-time visitors to Newport we didn't quite know what to expect. Our stay couldn't have been more wonderful!!! The Hilltop Inn is first class all the way. The service, decor, location..........perfection.
What a great place!
We had never stayed in a B&B, but thought it would be the way to go in Rhode Island. It was a great experience. The house is lovely, and the staff is wonderful. We were greeted by Melissa, who does the cooking, which was amazing. She was so helpful in giving us places to see, do, and places to eat. The breakfasts were just delicious, and served so elegantly. The little breakfast nook was bright and cheery, and easy to mingle and get to know the other guests if wanted. The afternoon tea was great too! We had to leave before breakfast was served on our last day, and Melissa made us breakfast anyway! It was so nice to be around bright, cheery, helpful and genuinely nice people! We feel very fortunate to pick such a great B&B on the first try!
Excellent last minute getaway
My wife and I were fortunate enough to spend a night at the Hilltop and it was wonderful. We had only planned to do one night in Newport and stayed at the Ivy which was also very nice. We decided to stay an extra day. Since it was mid week we knew we were not going to have a problem. After touring several places we stopped in at the Hilltop an knew immediately that we wanted to stay there. We were given the Stewart room which has it's own private porch. We also had a spacious and luxurious bathroom.
The staff was friendly and great at helping us select a place to eat. We came back and found our bed turned down and the robe's laid out. Very classy.
If there is any downside to the stay there it's the fact that it's difficult, yet not impossible to walk down to the waterfront area. Actually the walk back uphill after a very good meal is the problem.
I only wish we had more time to spend there. We will definitely be back.
Hilltop is so good, I don't want you to know!
I did a lot of research before booking this inn for our 3 night stay in September and we were 100% satisfied with Hilltop. It was a very, very worthwhile indulgence.
The breakfasts each morning were i n c r e d i b l e; literally the best omelets I have ever had, with fresh ingredients from the chef's own garden. The afternoon and early evening snacks were extensive and delicious. The staff and service here were superb. Technically there was one staff member who was new and could not assist us much with planning our day, but there was always someone around who could help. Although we stayed in the smallest room and had plenty of space (with a lot of extra storage space available under the bed for our suitcases). The bathroom was bigger than we expected from their pictures and the jacuzzi tub was used everyday with their complimentary bath salts. GREAT products! GREAT bedding, too.
The grounds were pristine with wonderful gardens and a quaint patio and fountain. The Inn has been newly renovated and is in perfect condition. Be sure to check out the before and after photos in the study. The rooms were virtually sound-proof and we never heard any sounds from other rooms and only a slight hum of the passing cars outside, not at all objectionable and i would not have even noted this except that other reviewers had complained about this.
For us, the location was perfect. It does involve some walking to wherever you go, downtown, Cliffwalk, mansions - but we really enjoy parking our car when we check in and walking everywhere until we check out so it worked for us. Wear good walking shoes! (I cannot stress that enough). The staff was great with setting up dinner reservations and always gave the best recommendations. We generally started off each evening with a sunset cocktail at the roof top bar at The Hotel Viking, across the street. Nearly empty both times we were there, and pricey, but the view is amazing.
We loved coming back each night to hear the sounds of soft music playing throughout the inn and in our room, with the sheets turned down.
So now that you know how wonderful the Hilltop is, let's keep it our little secret.
believe the hype
This is quintessential B&B style. A beautiful property, seamless service, excellence in the details. Not on the "main drag" but centrally located, only a couple of years old, quiet and stylish, this is a clear winner. Do not hesitate....
I would go back over and over again! My boyfriend and I go to the Hilltop Inn at least once a year. The house is marvelous. It is full of charm and elegance. In each bedroom there is a fireplace and Jacuzzi tub. The rooms are well kept and beautiful. The people who work there are amazing as well. All of them are kind, sweet, and willing to go the extra mile to make your stay extra special. They serve a delicious breakfast and also cook up some goodies for tea time! I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to relax and enjoy themselves in Newport!

Example of what a B&B should be.
This was the second time me and my GF stayed there and again we were completely satisified. The Inn itself is a fine example of newport homes and is warm and cozy made even warmer by the wonderfull staff (Janet, Jessica & Melissa to name a few). The rooms are wonderfully and tastefully appointed I have stayed in the Stewart and Kay rooms and each has their own subtle touches to differentiate it from the other "cookie cutter" style of other inn's. The service is top notch and very discrete, rooms are tidied and beds turned down while away, and the meals are delicious. Overall this is a place that I actually look forward to staying in unlike other hotel's and inns.
great place to stay
Just returned from our stay at the Hilltop Inn, and we would highly reccommed it!- It was a beautiful bed and breakfest. The staff and food were great. Next time we are in Newport we will stay at Hilltop again!
This was our second time staying at the Hilltop and we will be returning time and time again in the coming years. The Hilltop is not your average bed and breakfast. This is an inn where modern, luxurious amenities meets the elegant charm of a fine newport home. The comfort, elegance, and hospitality at the Hilltop make it well worth the money; the location is excellent and you feel like you are in your own vacation home the entire time.
My husband and I can't wait for our next visit. Janet and the staff run a top notch inn. We will always return to the Hilltop!
