this was the worst place i have ever stayed in!!
the rooms were old and gross.. the shower curtain was full of mold there were ants in the bathroom the sheets were stained. the staff was horrible! they had no answers for anything.
they serve breakfast every morning in a very unsanitary kitchen and u are not allowed to bring it back to your room. we stayed 2 nights and the maid did not clean our room once.
overall there was nothing good about my stay here!

Unique Quality: moldy shower curtain, ants in the bathroom and stains on the sheets

One Day in Newport

by dmarsh2

Hi--we are going to visit Newport for one day next week and I have a couple of questions. Where do you recommend parking for the Cliff Walk? Are there places to picnic along the walk or is that discouraged? Are there any nearby sandwich places to get food for lunch along the walk? Can you recommend a good, moderately priced waterfront restaurant for dinner (we have 2 adults and 2 teens). Many thanks!!

You are in luck because the Cliff Walk is right beside the largest beaches in Newport, and there is usually plenty of parking (unless it's a beautiful day in the summer). The cliff walk is just before the beaches if you are coming from downtown. Keep driving a mile or so past the beaches to get to a strip of sandwich shops and clam shacks, where you can grab a lunch to go.

Also on this strip is the Atlantic Beach Club, which sits on the beach and offers outdoor dining at pretty reasonable prices.

Check out for information on all Newport restaurants -- it's a useful site for visitors. Also, will have info on restaurants and the cliff walk.

Travel Tips for Newport

The Breakers

by windoweb

The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) established the family fortune in steamships and later in the New York Central Railroad, which was a pivotal development in the industrial growth of the nation during the late 19th century.

Mansions-Absolutely no photography allowed

by Gypsystravels

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside any of the mansions and the only exception is during the Christmas holiday season when you are allowed to photograph the Christmas trees in both The Breakers and Marble House and during the summer when photography is allowed in the Logia of The Breakers.

It is clearly stated that photography is prohibited indoors. Photography is permited of the exterior of the mansions including the many gardens and only if you are using the photos for personal use (copy rights).

Respect the rules and do not try to sneak in any pictures of the interior of the mansions.

Newport Candle Company

by cjg1 about Newport Candle Company

Not exactly Yankee Candle but they had some interesting shaped candles in a varity of fragrances. The store itself is small but full of a rainbow of colored candles. They had interesting shell candles and holiday candles. From tapers to votives they have every size candle. Any candle you could possibly want in an array of colors.

Great drinks and good dinner

by cjg1 about Griswold's Tavern

This is a place just up Bellevue from the Viking hotel. We originally came here because it was on the American Airlines Idine list. We liked it so much we ended up here twice that day. Griswold has become a place that we like to drop in and have a few drinks when we are visiting Newport.

It is your typical pub. Seating in one area for the restaurant and then a bar area. But it was the service and good food and drink that brought us back.

We had some onion soup with our afternoon drinks on our first visit. I think I just had a beer but Liz had an incredible hot chocolate with Godiva chocolate liquor. It was topped with a nice mound of whipped cream and she loved it.

Griswold's is the hole in the wall restuarant/pub for the locals. We have come back several times for drinks and always found the service good and the staff friendly. When it was time for dinner we came back. We were needing idines to get her to the highest level so this was a logical choice.

We both had variations of the burger for dinner and in both cases they were very good. I remember feeling so full and happy with our choice. The dinner waitress that Saturday was quite amazing as well. She was laughing and joking and always right on point with anything we required. Service well above your normal pub.

Ocean Ave

by acemj

A drive along Bellevue Avenue is great particularly if the weather doesn't permit walking along the Cliff Walk. Eventually, Bellevue Avenue turns into Ocean Avenue where the string of giant mansions starts to thin out a bit, but doesn't completely end. There is a cool, rocky beach at Brenton Point State Park that provides great views out into the harbor and across it to Land's End (the southern end of the Cliff Walk).
