Travel Tips for Newport

No Photography Please

by cjg1

There is no photography allowed in the mansions. During the Holidays you may ask permission to take a photograph of the Christmas tree in the breakers or Marble house. This is by permission only. In Rosecliff you can ask for a picture to be taken on the heart shaped staircase. It was very annoying to see people disregarding the rules and snapping away while walking through the house.

Pictures of the exterior of the house and grounds are allowed.

THE BREAKERS. Newport's most palatial summer residence, the symmetry of design, opulence and lavish use of alabaster, marble, mosaics, and antique woods rival the magneficent northen Italian Renaissance palaces after which it was modeled.
The 70-rooms mansion overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.

Steakhouse on the wharf

by Herkbert about 22 Bowen's Wine Bar & Grille

Located on Bowen's Wharf, you can watch the sailboats loading up and getting under way while enjoying your meal. The restaurant is large, but not too large as to be impersonal. They specialize in steaks and seafood - surprise!

The food was all of good quality and cooked just as we ordered it. The service staff was quite pleasant and efficient. We enjoyed comparing travel and food notes with our server while ordering and waiting for our food.

The prices were decent for a nice restaurant in a tourist area. The wine list provided many choices in all price ranges. We had a bottle of Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc that went well with our meals.

I would recommend this restaurant for a more upscale dinner along the waterfront. My wife's seared scallops with lobster risotta was the hit of the evening. Not that the other food was bad, but her meal was perfectly presented and was a great taste combination.

Burlingame State Park

by chodearm

Pulling into Easton Beach we were on a scavenger hunt for places to sleep. We wanted a canopy of stars but instead ended up beneath a canopy of pine. We were directed here by local opinion. 700 and something campsites settled in between these trees. With a 3 minute drive to the beach or a 35 minute drive to Newport, Rhode Island, this was to be a perfect settling for the night. The lines we were presented with upon arrival numbered 50 persons or more, but even though, space was still vacant. Try to arrive early as it seems this place will definately fill.

The Breakers

This is the largest mansion, built by Cornelius Vanderbilt. A number of the mansions are open for public tours. Some have concerts and other special events. Visit the web site below for information on them.
