Elizabeth Hext House c 1720 (#13 on walking tour)
by grandmaR
The Hext House AKA Riverview is at 207 Hancock Street. It is set way back from the street and the photo was taken through the windshield as we were driving by. It is built on a tabby foundation, and is one of the oldest houses in Beaufort. In 1864, it was sold for $640 by the U.S. Tax Commission.
Thomas Fuller House c 1786 (#25 on walking tour)
by grandmaR
The 1211 Bay Street house which was built in 1786 by Thomas Fuller and is noted for its tabby walls. The exterior of the two foot thick tabby walls is covered with scored plaster to resemble stone. The house has 12 inch thick hand-hewn structural timbers that span the entire 45 foot depth of the house. It is one of the finest early houses in Beaufort.
MM 536 Anchorage and low cost docks
by grandmaR
There is an anchorage right off Beaufort that a lot of people use.
The seawall is 50 cents/ft /day. Boats can tied up during the day for free, but after 5 pm, they have to register at the marina office and pay the overnight fee. I don't know how they do that, since the office closes at 5.
I wouldn't do the sea wall since the tides here are almost 8 feet, and I think it would be hard on your lines and fenders to tie up to a wall.
I think you can land your dinghy at the marina
GRACIOUS BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA
by VeronicaG
"Architecturally Gorgeous!"
Summer vacations at Hilton Head often included a drive over to Beaufort,South Carolina. My husband has always said he would love to retire here.
Beaufort first became a community in the 1700's when planters from Barbados, English indentured servants, religious freedom seekers and tradesmen came here to seek new lives and fortunes. By the 1820-60's it was a thriving town! The homes here are more like plantation style homes, but located in a small town rather than on vast areas of land.
The Robert Means house (about 1790)is located at 1207 Bay Street. He was a prominent merchant and planter. Later, Edwin Denby, Secretary of the Navy under President Harding lived here.
"Another Beaufort beauty!"
It is said that this house ( 1810) was once in a different location, but the family had been plagued with illness and poor health so it was deemed necessary to move it to a different site.
Apparently the home was sawn in half in order to move it to the 1203 Bay Street location. It was once occupied by a General Saxton who hosted a visit by General W.T. Sherman.
