Col. Shaw

by steffischer

I was wondering is Col. Robert Gould Shaw is stil buried at the site of Ft Wagner, along with his men? Have any reminent's been found "body" wise of these brave soldiers? I would like to visit the site of where Ft Wagner used to stand. Is that possible?

Re: Col. Shaw

Could have been washed away due to erosion.
Reports say he was buried in a mass common grave along with his men by the Confederates and seeing as they were besieged on the island he was there.Inquire at the national archives, site given.

Travel Tips for Charleston

Antebellum Plantations

by roamer61

Outside Greater Charleston, one can visit one of many beautiful plantation houses built from the 18th-19th Centuries. Most owned by men and women who made their fortunes first in Sugarcane and eventually Cotton. One of these was Boone Hall Plantation.
(See tip) Here is a picture of the primary Plantation House. Certainly one of the most beautiful in the area. Beautiful 18th and 19th Century architecture.

Charleston's French Quarter

by Ewingjr98

The French Quarter of Charleston was designated as such in 1973 when the area was being preserved and revitalized. This section of the city along the Cooper River contains many of the city's oldest structures as it was one of the original parts of the city when it was founded in 1680.

This area has art galleries, Waterfront Park, Pink House Tavern (1712), Dock Street Theatre (1809), French Huguenot Church (1844), St. Philip's Episcopal Church (1835), and the Old Slave Mart (1859).

private boat ride to secluded island

by captgresh

If you want to do something really off the beaten path that's amazing go out to Morris Island by boat. The boat leaves from Folly Beach (20 minutes from downtown Charleston) and it is a private trip that won't break the bank but something the family will love! You'll have dolphins right next to the boat, learn about the estuaries and walk out to an old lighthouse on Morris Island. You can swim in tide pools, collect sea shells and you may be the only ones on the whole island. Your family will love it!

Nature walks - South...

by klstomi

Nature walks - South Carolina's greatest asset is it's countryside. There are many places just north and south of the city to enjoy nature/birding etc. Caw Caw Interpretive Center is part of the county park system, ~10 miles south of the city (17S) and built around the remains of a plantation (no house). You're sure to see gators here! Francis Marion Forest is ~12 miles north of the city (check in at the Seewee center (17N). Serious birders can take the ferry to Bull's Island in the Cape Romaine NWR.

Wish I'd Found it Sooner!!

by Sagespot about Gita's Gourmet, Inc.

This is a tiny little shop on the north end of the outdoor market - and I wish I'd found it sooner. They had the BEST prices for unique food/tea/beverages type things in the whole area!

They had tons of teas, hot sauces, southern mixes, dips, etc. A total assortment of wild culinary type stuff. It made for GREAT gifts! Charleston tea is really reasonably priced here. Skip where they're sold in the outdoor market and go to Gita's!

In general if you're looking for deep south specialty foods then this is the place for you. Way less than for the same stuff at the outdoor stalls.
