Charm in a Garden: the Battery Carriage House Inn

The Battery Carriage House Inn’s size, charm and relaxing atmosphere are exactly what we were seeking when we visited over the Memorial Day Weekend in 2002. Keep in mind that the Inn is a small (11 rooms) bed and breakfast, and not a full-blown, cookie-cutter hotel with myriad services and amenities.

The historic 1843 private house stands across the street from White Point Gardens at the very tip of Charleston. It’s a residential area quite removed from the hustle and bustle of the tourist and business district to the north. However, restaurants and sights are within easy walking distance of the Inn’s front door.

The Carriage House Inn sits behind the main house, and you enter through the path that horse carriages would have taken. It is removed from the street, and set in a garden; it is blessedly peaceful and quite. Our room, on the far right-hand side of the second floor, was well lit with morning sun from the east-facing window, and afternoon light from the westward facing window and door.

For two of the four mornings we stayed here, we took breakfast under the garden arbor. The other two mornings we had breakfast in our cozy, clean and well-appointed room, with its four-poster bed and lace canopy. The melt-in-your-mouth, buttery, light and flaky croissants were as good as we enjoyed in Paris. That is quite a complement!
