A Great Inn

The inn is family run, and the staff is really personable. The inn is about a five minute walk to The Market, which is sort of the middle of downtown. It's less expensive than other hotels in the area, but very, very nice none the less. It's located right across the street from a 24 hour grocery store, but the staff will go get anything you need. And the grocery store used to be a train station back in the day, so it's not obvious.

Unique Quality: The inn used to be a stationer's warehouse so it has a lot of the original exposed wood beams.

More about Ansonborough Inn

Great Getaway! We loved the Ansonborough Inn!

by A TripAdvisor Member

We visited Charleston from Jan. 27 thru Jan. 30 for our 10 year wedding anniversary and we stayed at the Ansonborough Inn. We found the inn to be the perfect getaway. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They arranged for a carriage ride to pick us up at the hotel. The staff was more than happy to recommended restaurants, and make all the reservations. The room we stayed in was large, well decorated, and clean. We loved the oil paintings that were located throughout the hotel and in the rooms. The breakfast they offered each morning was adequate, and the wine and cheese social was very relaxing. The location of the inn was close to everything. We were within walking distance to all the restaurants and to Market Street. Parking was not a problem at the inn because they have a parking lot across the street. (Parking in Charleston is very hard to find.) I would highly recommend the inn to anyone and we will definitely be back. Visit the Ansonborough Inn's website and view the photos.

(If you visit Charleston, eat at Garibaldi's and try the flounder. You will not be dissapointed.)

Wonderful!!!

by A TripAdvisor Member

After much research for our first trip to Charleston, we decided on the Ansonborough Inn and were not disappointed. The Inn was wonderful. The staff was very curtious and eager to help us in any way they could. The afternoon wine and cheese was a blessing, the all-day lemonade was appreciated after walking, and the rooftop terrace is as romantic as it gets. I would recommend this Inn to anyone who wants to be close enough to the market and still have privacy. Price is unbeatable!

Wonderful place to stay!

I thoroughly enjoyed my recent stay at the Ansonborough. Inn and room immaculate. Beautiful, 3rd floor room (not a loft), 2 brick walls, high ceiling with wooden beams and chandeliers, oil paintings abound. Staff very helpful. Nice continental breakfast; drinks (lemonade, sweetened tea, water and coffee) with cookies during the day, and wine and cheese in late afternoon) all give a "welcome home" feel. Approx. 3 block walk to Market Street area, great location overall. Do the Gullah tour.

Exceeded my expectations

by TripAdvisor Member Hinson4

After doing alot of research on the many Charleston hotels, I decided on the Ansonborough Inn. The rooms are very large and have exposed wood beams and wood ceilings which are beautiful. There are many room configurations. I chose the Loft room which has a queen bed downstairs and a queen bed upstairs in the "loft". This was perfect since I was traveling with my 15 year old son. He enjoyed the privacy of the loft. The Loft rooms are on the 3rd floor. It was very quiet. I would not, however, recommend the first floor rooms because they do open up right into the lobby area across from the check in desk. I enjoyed the wine and cheese reception and the continental breakfast which offered pastries, bagels with jelly and cream cheese, and three kinds of cereal. The rooftop deck was very nice and you can watch the cargo ships dock at the ports which was very interesting. The staff was very helpful with directions (they even provided us with a print out of directions to various attractions), dinner reservations, etc. We were able to walk to restaurants, shopping and to the Battery which was a little far but very doable even in 100 degree weather!
All in all, I would highly recommend this inn. Debra Hisnon

nice but not for us

by A TripAdvisor Member

We booked this hotel for its uniqueness, price, and proximity to downtown Charleston. It met all our expectations and the hotel was very clean, had a nice wine and cheese hour, etc. Personally I found our room and decor kind of creepy. The decor was styled around dogs and hunting, and everything was very dark. Our room was huge and random noises were heard at night. We left a night early due to that, but if you like that type of style I can't complain about anything else the hotel offered.

Shines

Unusually clean and well kept inn with large rooms and suites. Is a few blocks off the main historic district so have to walk far enough that you don't want to come back to your room often. The rooms and furnishing are new with lots of painting in the rooms and public areas. All the wood and old beams make it on the dark side.
The building is an old warehouse and has a large central atrium which transmits a lot of sound. Try to stay on the side that faces the bay for less noise and the third floor rooms that have some water view, large trucks are unloading on the Ansonborough St. side supplying a grocery store day and night.
Coffee, juices and cookies available all day-generic continential breakfast and evening wine and cheese.
Staff pleasant but not overly helpful- not a perfect stay but a good compromise.

one major problem

by A TripAdvisor Member

The hotel lived up to our expectations in every regard but one. The location is great, the decor is impressive, the rooms are spacious and well furnished, and the atomosphere is one of refined gentility. However, there is one major problem that spoiled what should have been a memorable stay. In either the design or the construction, no thought was given to sound proofing. Consequently, when you go into your room and close the door, you can still hear everything that goes on in the lobby, and since all rooms open onto the lobby this is disturbing and annoying. Perhaps even worse, you can hear everything, including conversations, in the adjacent rooms. One evening we were entertained, if that is the word, by the sexual exploits of our next door neighbors. If you stay here, either bring ear plugs or book a room on the top floor.

Very good place to stay

by TripAdvisor Member brodrips

Everything was good. Very nice, huge rooms. Good service and a great location. Very close (walking distance) to the historical/market district, but far enough away to not always be in the middle of everything. Only drawback was some early morning delivery truck noise from the grocery next door.

Wow!

by TripAdvisor Member misscarol

Found the Ansonborough to be very comfortable. Wyatt and the staff are very friendly and helpful, the rooms are nicely appointed. We had a large room on the third floor. We were concerned with other postings, citing noise in the lobby, but we had not problem-slept like babies. I also don't consider it a far walk from the main points of interest , but then we like to walk. The breakfast was very good-enjoyed the availability of coffee and cookies during the day and the wine and cheese served in the early evening was nice after a day of walking.
