Decent place to sleep

I won’t knock Comfort Inn, because I’ve stayed in plenty over the years and they’re okay – and it’s no different here. In the face of the historic district of Charleston, though, staying here is a huge letdown. It’s about 2 miles from the area you want to be, for one; it’s utterly lacking in charm, for another. The staff does what they can, but really, what can they do against such odds?

Anyway, the rooms are okay. The bed was comfortable, and things worked, although my tub drained very slowly and there was no mini-fridge (a problem since the only restaurants in the immediate vicinity are fast food). I was (inexplicably) in a room with disability accessibility, which had loads of room to move around and grab bars in the bathroom. The surroundings are bland to ugly; Bee street was flooded for a while every day, and according to one cab driver had been under construction for it for years. Everything is lackluster, from the clean but worn bathrooms to the breakfast buffet of individual-serve cereal packets and canned fruit cocktail. The waffles they advertise, which you make yourself, don’t cook all the way through in the little griddles provided (hint: use less batter than you’d usually use). There is a pool and gym (neither of which I used); the WiFi dropped me occasionally.

The staff did try, though. From what I overheard, they dutifully (and pleasantly) logged some silly complaints, and some complaints there was no way they could resolve; for me, they booked cabs that always showed up on time, and were nice about me bringing a rented bike to my room (allowed, and good, since bike theft is a particular problem in Charleston). The cleaning crew were friendly. It’s easy from the airport, and the CARTA bus to downtown is a couple of blocks away, so you don’t need a car to stay here. And, at $500 for 4 nights, it’s one of the cheapest places anywhere near the historic district.
