I think you are referring to benne wafers - they sell them all over the market. Those along with homemade Whoopie pies are delicious....you might also enjoy pralines. They are my all time favorite candy! :) I love River Street Sweets, but have also ordered online from there and Charleston Candy Company. I've had success every time I've placed an order with both of them. Good luck and enjoy!!

Travel Tips for Charleston

Wake up Sun Shine!

by tpangelinan

It's always a good idea to get up early but make sure you do it here because there is so much to do, see and eat! Have breakfast if your hotel offers a continental breakfast, why not you paid for it and you might be supprised. Our hotel had fresh baked danishes which were delish and coffee to go! Grab your camera, wallet and batteries and get on your way early because you will wish you had more time. This is a very fun place to explore, the shops are all really fun to go through, the restaurants are every where with good food and friendly staff and plenty of tours from walking to carriage guided tours.

Remember that this is the 'Holy City,' and its antiquated laws can sometimes be 'holier-than-thou,' especially when it comes to drinking. In the land of mini-bottles and early closings, you can only drink til 2 am. This is one of the few annoying things about life in Charleston...the other big ones being bad roads and a serious lack of parking.

Southern Food

by TheTravelingNerd

Foods that are a MUST try when visiting Charleston are:
fried okra
catfish
hush puppies
shrimp and grits
she-crab soup
grits
collard greens
hoppin john (rice and black eyed peas)
corn casserole
macaroni and cheese (trust me the southern version is very different from your traditional mac & cheese)
boiled peanuts
bar-b-q sandwhiches at Bessingers
DESSERTS:
apple or peach cobbler
sweet potato pie
red velvet cake

Check out the beaches!

If your looking for a day at the beach take a 20 minute ride up Route 17 North to Sullivan's Island and drive toward the coast, find a spot to park and head for the beach. Beautiful dunes and the water is warm. The water current is strong here so I don't suggest swimming. This is a great beach for walks along the waters edge and taking in the views.

Hwy 61 (Ashley River Road)

by MandaJ320

This road hugs the Ashley River from Charleston to Summerville. For miles and miles, all you can see are Spanish moss covered oaks draping over the road. This is a scenic drive without having to go to the mountains.
