I have not stayed at this hotel. I usually like the Hampton Inn because it has free local calls and a nice free breakfast. They usually have an outdoor pool (as this one does) and do not usually have a restaurant on site.

This hotel is wonderful!!!

by TripAdvisor Member Lucky24

This is one great hotel. After reading other reviews I was apprehensive in staying at this location. The front desk was more then helpful, the bellhop was just great and my over all experience was just delightful.

The complimentary breakfast was great. Cookies and punch in the afternoon was just the pick-me-up we needed to keep exploring Charleston.

I have stayed in alot of Hampton Inns and this one is by far the best of the best!!

Thanks Hampton Inn!!

Wonderful weekend

Very clean, up to date hotel. Across from transporation and visitors center. Used hop on hop off transporation. Close enough that you can walk into the downtown. Friendly staff. Good breakfast. Very attentive, friendly and helpful staff.

Perfectly adequate -- no more, no less

My stay at this hotel was on 9/8/06. I've stayed at about a dozen different hotels in/around the Charleston Historic District over the last 10 years, but this was my first experience at this particular Hampton Inn.

I had no issues with the room rate as others have -- my travel was booked by the Fed. govt. The parking for the hotel is in the city garage next door; it's $15/day if you bill it to your room, $12 if you pay cash. This is a comparable rate for 'downtown' or Historic District hotels.

I found the desk staff to be remarkably friendly and helpful. For example, I needed to meet colleagues at another hotel farther downtown and didn't want to deal with retrieving my car from the garage and then trying to park in another downtown garage. One desk clerk made a call and got me a private van (cost: $3) within 5 minutes -- amazing. Beyond that, check-in and check-out were efficient. The staff tending to the breakfast buffet were very friendly without being intrusive. The room itself was a little worn, but clean and comfortable (especially the bed) -- exactly what I expected. Very quiet conditions -- I think the hotel was packed with a navy reunion group, but once I got in my room, I never heard a peep from the hall or another room.

My only negative feedback concerns the location: If you prefer to walk to restaurants and sites, this place is a little far uptown (north of Calhoun St.). You are close to the shopping of upper King Street, and you're literally across the street from the Visitor Center and the bus depot. Be aware, however, it's at least a 10-15 min. walk to the restaurants and shops down on East Bay and the City Market. SInce that's where I tend to go when visiting Charleston, I found the hotel to be somewhat inconvenient.

Were location not a concern, I would stay here again.

This is how I define hospitality!

We've traveled extensively both in this country and Europe but we have never experienced a hotel staff as dedicated to quality service as at this Hampton Inn in Charleston, SC. Every question we asked was immediately and informatively answered, every need we had was instantly attended to! The Inn itself is quite nice and very well located, just across from the Visitor Center and adjacent to the trolley stops. The hotel has no bar but the French Restaurant, 39 Rue de Jean, is two doors down and is a first-rate watering hole (and good restaurant too). And the rates were extremely reasonable! We were both newcomers to Charleston and fell deeply in love with the city. We wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else in Charleston.

No Problems - everything just right.

Very pleased with the Hampton Inn Charleston. Staff was very friendly from the desk to the breakfast staff to cleaning staff.

The hotel was built in an old railway warehouse so moderately historic - although the rooms were modern up to date Hampton Inn Style. Room had the new King Beds - very comfortable. High Speed Wireless access. Breakfast was nice, Lobby breakfast area was clean with indoor and outdoor seating by the pool. Weather was too chilly to enjoy the pool, but the pool area was very inviting.

Hotel is right across the street from the tourist centre and has a trolley bus that will take you to the historic distric. Also located behind the original Citadel - now an Embassy Suites.

Would have no problem recommending this property - had to move here from the Historic District Double Tree because of problems with the Internet connections at Double Tree. Room was half the price of Double Tree and much more updated.

Only downside was it was a 10 minute walk to the historic area, but the shuttle was available, and the shopping along the way wasn't too bad.

pretty good. nice folks.

This property was nice overall. Rooms were a tad small for Hampton Inn standards, and were clean and fresh. The location is great, very close to King Street and other fun locations. It's also more fun to stay here if you're on business as it's only about 10 minutes from the airport.
They tried to charge me twice for the room (I booked it online wtih one credit card and mistakenly used my other credit card to "check in" with...) but got the problem fixed after a few days via their 1-800 number.

Great Place!

After reading some of the reviews I had to write one too. The hotel was definitely quiet...in fact a Stephen Stills concert played next door and we never heard a sound. Tours were easy to board and book as the Visitors' Center was across the street.
The staff was friendly and efficient.....we would definitely return to this hotel!

Godd Value for a great location

by TripAdvisor Member okguy2937

The Charleston Hampton Inn - Historic District has a great location with a great price. Like other Hampton Inns the austere interior decoration theme in the public areas and rooms will not enthrall you, unless you are a big fan of U.S. Post Office decor, but it represents the central idea of the Hampton Inn Chain, value.

The location is stellar with the surronding 200 year old churches and homes is is very picturesque and puts you in the middle of the tourist area of interest. The setting is like jumping into a Revolutionary war epic without the drama. There are horse, (and mule,) drawn carriages abounding and the local aritocracy likes to exhibit their own personal horse drawn rigs on weekends. This is unique to Charleston because most cities prohibit such a practice without a controlled permit.

A surprise at the Hampton Inn is the Pool. It is surronded by well manicurred shrubury and is exceptionally clean. Check in and housekeeping are excellent and the front desk seems to be attentive to most requests. The free morning breakfast is quite good.

You will enjoy the Hampton Inn because of the neighboorhood that surronds it and the money you are saving by avoiding the close by 4 star properties and their inflated rates.

Getting to know the locals is quite an experience and if you are offended by prententiousness and a thinly veiled condecending attitude you may want to avoid it. The Hotel employees are usually very refreshing and I would be too if I had to put up with some of these local prolateriate personalities; strangers must represent a pleasent distraction.

Enjoy the Hampton Inn and Charleston

well kept secret!

by TripAdvisor Member giddyhorse

This hotel is a well kept secret! Its location at the northern edge of the historic districft puts it within easy walking distance of key sites but just far enough away to be peaceful. There is a lovely courtyard with a pool, and free lavish continental breakfast each day. The lobby looks recently renovated as did the guest rooms. All were clean, neat and spacious. The staff was courteous and friendly. The adjacent parking garage is great for travellers with a car and is twelve dollars a day for hotel guests. It is around the corner from a delicious cupcake shop and gelato shop as well as an excellent tapas restaurant. Overall - I would stay there again!
