Another nice place to stay

Booked this hotel through a consolidator on a weekend night where NO downtown rooms were available elsewhere.... and was pleasantly surprised. First, it was nice to get a steal of a rate. Second, despite having a less than desirable view (hello! You do NOT get the best view for the rock bottom rates people... why this isn't common sense is beyond me), our stay was excellent.

We drove up around 11:30, and since our room had already been cleaned, they allowed us to check in early, unload our bags, and park the car. The hotel is located across from the fountain at waterfront park, so we set right off to do some damage to our credit cards on King Street.

We arrived back at the hotel just in time for the wine and cheese reception, which was a nice amenity (also provided at French Quarter Inn). We missed the cookies and milk later that night because we took a late dinner.

When we arrived back after our night out, we slept soundly on the very comfortable beds. The complimentary continental breakfast (choice of three different combninations) was ample and delicious. Check out was a breeze. The staff was excellent.

Unique Quality: Location, location, location. Yes, parking is $15 a day, but thats typical in Charleston. You have full in and out priviliges if you want tot travel to the beach for the day. The rooms were nicely decorated in furniture commissioned from local woodworks, which was a nice touch. Bathroom was quite nice, though I would have preferred a double vanity.

All in all, I found it slightly less nice than the French Quarter Inn, but if the FQI scores a 95, the HVI would get a 90...

More about Harbourview Inn Charleston

Great Location

by TripAdvisor Member DimbWit

Great location, walking distance to restaurant row, antiques and the market. Great rooftop bar across the street, closest inn to the waterfront park.

All staff was friendly and helpful (good job, Paul). Room was plenty big, with everything needed.

Lobby was nice with wine & cheese nightly; large windows open to the breezes off the Harbor.

Roof top open for guests to enjoy breakfast, or just to sit at the tables and enjoy the sites.

Would definitely stay there again.

Great hotel ... and I've stayed at many bad hotels!

by TripAdvisor Member abbysmom2004

We stayed here Dec. 9 - 11 2004 and had an awesome time. We parked the car on Friday and didn't move it until Sunday when we left! Everything that we wanted to do was within walking distance ... the market place for shopping, history tours, horse drawn carriage tours, restaurants. The bed was comfortable and the room appeared clean. We paid for a harbor view room which we were very happy with. I can see how people who don't pay for the upgraded view room would be unhappy ... it looks over some electrical substation, so spend the extra money. We got a good discount since we're AAA members. The breakfast was sort of plain (no hot foods other than bagels really), but it was fine for two mornings and it was nice to be able to have it delivered to your room at the time you choose. The parking was a bit pricey ($14 per day for valet ... no self parking at hotel), but there is a parking garage next door that is probably cheaper. The milk and cookies were a nice touch in the evenings, and our 2 year old would have loved the jar of M&Ms had she been with us. Enjoy! We did.

A Great Place with An Attentive Staff

by TripAdvisor Member JackEWadd

We came to the Harbour View Inn on Christmas evening for a four day stay. The rooms are large each morning you will have a staple breakfast delivered to your door (after the very polite staff rings up your room to prepare you for their arrival). Every evening there is a nice wine and cheese "Happy Hour" where you can meet other guests (if you so choose) to exchange ideas for tours, attractions and eating establishments. While there were many other Charleston hotels that were more prominately decorated for Christmas, the Harbour Inn was a great value for the price! An additional bonus - the Harbour Inn is within walking distance of most fine restaurants, the Battery area & the finest examples of architecture in Charleston. We shall stay there again on our next visit.

Great room and staff

by TripAdvisor Member cmoye

We arrived on Wednesday December 29, 2004 for 2 nights. Would have loved to stay another night if time had permitted. We were upgraded to the Penthouse rooms and it was WONDERFUL. Great room, with great view. Loved the fireplace. Instant fire with the touch of two switches. Loved the wine & cheese every evening, as well as the cookies and milk. The location was perfect. The nearby restaurants were within walking distance. All meals were excellent. Especially loved SNOB(Slightly North of Broad). The only area that I saw room for improvement was the free breakfast each morning. Was not impressed with the quality. Nice touch, but the food just wasn't up to par. The entire staff was very helpful and friendly. Would definitely stay there again. Loved the entire city of Charleston.

Very disappointing for a 4 star hotel.

Pros: great view of the ocean; hotel offers wine and cheese and cookies before bed time. Location is great.
Cons: woman at the reception kept eating when we arrived and we had to wait till she was done! We had a king size room with a sea view - room itself has no character, more like a Holiday Inn. Towels and robes were old and incredibly harsh. There was no water in the room, no turn-down service. Brochures were old and had pages torn out, there were stains on the pillows, and some papers underneath the bed. Breakfast was late and newspapers never arrived. We were very disappointed and will not return again. Give it a try if you want to, but if you can check the rooms first.

Can't beat the location and ambience

by A TripAdvisor Member

My husband and I chose the Harbor View Inn from reviews we read on this site and we were not disappointed at all! We stayed during the Christmas Holidays were enthralled with the warmth and extra touches that this hotel provides. Our room was huge! The bathroom was an ample size and very clean. We were amazed at the extra luxuries such as milk and cookies, wine and cheese, and a completely complimentary breakfast. I was skeptical that we would some how be charged for these things at the end of our stay, but I was pleasantly surprised to realize that it was not the case. We most definitely recommend this hotel and are grateful to TripAdvisor for posting genuine reviews.

Charming and Utterly Delightful

by TripAdvisor Member yen

I love the charm of this hotel. We stayed in the historic room which were recommended when I talked to the hotel staff. The room was large and beautiful. Although it does not have the harborview, it made up 10 times more in charm. The room was extremely spacious and all the extra service and cookies made this one of my favorite hotels.

An average 3 star hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

I thought this was a four star hotel. It's clearly not. No room service, no coffee or tea dispenser in the room. To get hot drinks, you have to go to the foyer. Only continental style breakfasts served in your room at set times (asked for a bagel and only got cream cheese, no options). Glass of orange juice was maybe three thimblefuls. Operator never answered the phone. No one picked up the breakfast tray in the room even though I called twice and mentioned it to the receptionist.
Receptionist announced that I was "an expedia traveller" and said that meant a standard room (overlooking power station). Much talked about wine and cheese lasted approximately 30 minutes (I was in room opposite and so noticed how late they started and promptly they finished). Receptionists clueless about locations of key landmarks (no concierge I could find) and needed two of them to handle a single request while we all waited patiently in line. No magnifying mirror, (you have to stand 2 feet away from the one bathroom mirror, so good luck doing long distance makeup!), no separate hair conditioner, towels scratchy and ancient, substandard room in all respects. TV only has about 8 stations, poor reception. The Bellman was however, top notch, and seemed to be doing everybody else's job.
I would not have minded any of the above if this appropriately was rated a three star hotel. Without the above amenities, I don't see how it merits that fourth star.
