Trip to Charleston

by JOLLD0SP

I am planning a trip with in the next few weeks to Charleston. Which Beaches are the best and can you advise any low price motels on the beach?

I'm not a beach person, but I would say Sullivan's Island/Isle of Palms or Folly Island would have the best beaches. Most places that are on the beach are not also low priced. Your best bet is probably Kiawah Island.

Folly has character as a beach town, but the beach proper is nicer on the East Cooper side, meaning Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island. Kind of depends on what you want to do. For swimming and sunning, walking on the beach, you can't beat the Isle of Palms. There's a county-run park in the middle of the island; it costs to park, but you don't have to feed a meter, and there are showers and a changing area, kids' playground, concession stand and lifeguards. You can also park in a town-run lot or on the street. There are little cafes and taverns right on the ocean-side main drag;they're an easy walk from the park. Sullivan's is much more residential and you have to be careful to not park illegally, though early and late season you can find spots. Non-beach things are more interesting there, including Fort Moultrie, the lighthouse, a couple of lovely inns, the marsh side. In any case, don't swim near the end of either island, or even wade: the currents are dangerous. Folly is nice but harder to get to from downtown and the beach has erosion issues, though there's a nice county park at the island's southern end. All in all, I of P is probably the best, surest bet. Take U.S. 17 through Mount Pleasant and then the I of P connector: the drive is easy.

Travel Tips for Charleston

The Battery

by GUYON

The White Point Gardens (better known as Battery) is the root of the City. Located at the end of the peninsula and facing the Cooper River, it is a nice place to stroll.
The historic houses are gorgeous. Some are built before the Civil War.
Fortunately, the city has not been arsoned by General Sherman as Atlanta.

Notice the Charleston Single House. It is one room wide. Folklore and some guides will tell you it was built so narrow because the government taxed on the footage along the street. This is not true. It was more likely due to increasing scarcity of space within the old walled city and was designed to mitigate the unpleasantness of hot, humid summers.

The piazzas stretch the length of the house on both floors. These took advantage of the harbour breeze before there was air conditioning. What appears to be the front door is not. If you stand and knock there, nobody will hear you. The entrance to the house is usually in the middle of the first floor piazza.

Please don't tell us how you did it somewhere else or we will invite you to go back there quickly. As the late southern sage, Louis Grizzard once wrote, 'We can have your butt back in Cleveland, by evening'.

A native is someone born here. You can live here for 60 years and you will still be from 'off'.

We are nice folks (even though our driving belies the fact) who hope you have a good time.

Folly Island

by Jim_Eliason

This beach resort island is south of Charleston on Hwy171 , about a 15 minute drive from the city. Besides the beaches its a great spot to view Morris Island lighthouse which is a few km off the coast of Folly Island

While traveling on a back road you may come across a wide creek. The creeks run with the tide. So go when it's low. Fossil hunting for sharks teeth, fossil shells are likely to be found in a gravel area in the creek. I found a 4 inch sharks tooth in a creek. Back in the dinisuar days SC was underwater! About 40 million/billion years ago. Watch for rattlesnakes and watermaucasins. They usuaull like to lay on rocks in the sunshine and under rocks when they want to cool down.
