Transportation from Charleston to Savannah
by ipeschel
What is the best transportation from Charleston to Savannah? Car, train, bus, etc? We are on tight time constraints and want to spend as much time in each city. Thanks

Especially if time is a concern, I would rent a car and drive. It won't take long at all, it's not hard to figure out how to get there, and I think it's a beautiful drive.

Yes, yes, and yes. Although once you are in the city centers of Charleston and Savannah, you won't have a lot of use for the car (we were in both cities just a few weeks ago), we Americans really make it more convenient to drive by private car than in most other countries - and there are sites here that you can't really get to easily without your own car.
The car gives you by far the most flexibility, especially if you are constrained for time...

There is a Greyhound bus that runs between the two cities.

You can see their schedule and make your plans fit theirs.
Travel Tips for Charleston

Take a horse carriage ride. It really is the best way to get an overview of the city at a leisurely pace. Please note: Horses do get a little stinky. You may want to sit towards the back. Also, PLEASE be considerate of the horses! Do not take a carriage ride if the temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Would you lug around tourists in such heat??? The weather is great! Summers are indeed humid, but rarely get above 100. Winters are generally mild to chilly with little, or no, snow!

Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, 86 Hasell Street, the first congregation to practice Reform Judaism in the United States. Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim still worships in the synagogue constructed in 1840-41. It is the second oldest synagogue building in the United States and the oldest in continuous use. It is also the oldest surviving Reform synagogue in the world. The building is an example of Greek Revival architecture popular in Charleston in the pre-Civil War period.
Island Casual

The SC summers are HOT. June -September average 95+ degrees and with the humidity it can be stifeling. The best time to visit is October - May! Island casual is acceptable most anywhere. Great photo ops of beaches and historical sites.
Bicycling is the best way to explore
by IanDavies
Our hotel had complimentary bicycles so we borrowed one and set off to saunter around the city. Although the main roads are quite busy, the back streets, which is where there are lots of interesting things to see are blissfully quiet. This is a perfect way to see the place, quicker than walking but slower than a motorised tour.

Caw Caw Interpretative Center - This is an old plantation property that the Charleston Park system purchased. It gives a good overview of how rice was cultivated. The buldings are gone but if you like wildlife this is a good place. Depending on the season you can usually find herons egrets, gators and endangered Wood Storks plus the occasional Bald Eagle.
