Cruise ships
by Dabs
I was a little surprised to see one of the gigantor cruise ships docked in Charleston but amazingly it didn't seem to affect Charleston with the exception of the City Market which is within walking distance of the docks. When we asked our walking tour guide, he said the cruises that dock just for the day don't really have much of an effect on the local economy, they all go back to the ship for lunch, they take the organized bus tours and do a little shopping at the City Market. That's a real shame as there are gems to eat at like Jestine's and sights that you wouldn't see on a canned bus tour.

Take the city in. The architecture of Charleston is unmatched. I took a house tour of one of the old mansions. It was very interesting because you got a good feeling what 19th century Southern life is like. Here is a picture of a mansion that I passed while I was there. The marketplace in the center of Charleston is a must visit. The market area consists of vendors. I got some good buys there. It also has many local items. There are many restaurants that surround the market area. I stopped at one of the restaurants, the name escapes me. I had the best She-Crab soup ever. The seafood, especially the shrimp, was very fresh. Also, the beginning of May is quite pleasant. There was no crowds and more importantly no humidity.
Sweet-grass Basket-Weaving
by tpangelinan
Now we heard about the sweet-grass baskets that were made here, but until you feel the quality and see them make by the poeple that create them we didn't under stand why they cost so much. These sweet-grass baskets are all hand made a take some time to create, they say this trade has been past down for gereration since times of slavery and that the craft itself originated in West African slaves. These baskets are incredible, you can feel the quality and know that they will last for generations in your family.

Check out the little alley way / walking path in the down town between East Bay and Church Street. Just after Tradd Street. It is a cool little walkway! Very Romantic you will fill like you slipped into another time and place.
Old Charleston Lighthouse

Morris Island washed away long ago, but the lighthouse still remains. You can drive to the end of Folly Island, and walk out to the end of the beach to see the lighthouse sitting in the water. It is an amazing sight!
